hey all i need some help with missles. I have never used them have just been using my blasters up to tier four. Now I am finally giveing them a shot. I picked up a mark 3 proton launcher and some mark 1 proton missle packs. I loaded my launcher. No problems. I try and load my missle packs and says ammo doesn't go into that or something to that effect. Do i have to use Mark 3 proton missles also? I was under the impression that i could use any missle up to the launchers max. Any advice is very welcome.. thanks!
I might be tier 4....but i am still a space newbie

Yeah, you have to match pack types with launcher type. Although being able to load lesser ammo in higher ranked launchers is a pretty nice idea. But, as it stands you'll need mark 3 packs for that launcher.

grrrrr...dang it....well i will have to find a better stocked vendor....had plenty of launchers just no mark 3 missles.

Now that I'm getting back into Pilot, I was looking to add some missles and cm's to my ship.
I know what I previously used, Protons MK2/3 I believe, and never had a problem with them, but in comparing my options I had a question I've not seen answered before.
I did the research and figured out the screwy MK system again (why they made missles so complicated, I'll never know).
Image-Rec, Proton, and Spacebomb are all effective against both shields and armor equally (for each type, not compared to each other, that part I get).
I'm leaning towards Proton MK3 because they seem like the best mix of damage vs. effectiveness.
(For basic PvE grinding/leveling)
What I don't know is how it actually assigns damage.
Hypothetical Proton MK3:
damage 2000-5000
vs. shield .45
vs. armor .45
I shoot a missle at a ship that has not been attacked yet, pristene condition.
I get that its going to do 45% of the damage roll to the shields, so lets say it was 3500, making 1575 damage.
What happens to the vs. armor damage? Lost since it still has shields?
That's my guess.
So in a similar situation, say ship has 500 shields left, same missle/damage, the 1075 is wasted and the armor is then hit for 1575?
No armor damage because there were still shields?

Firstly, the Mk3 protons i carry have double hte damage of your hypothetical ones.
Secondly, the damage goes through shields, then armour, then components. Fire on in PvP at a pathetic RG Int user and watch it work!

It gets absorbed by shields and armour, of course ...for example,a 4k hit with .5 effectiveness vs. shields, hitting 1500 shields, will do 1000 damage (4000 - (1500 / .5)) to any armour or components. If it's .5 effectiveness vs. armour with 500 armour, the armour will JUST stop the damage. Missiles are only effective for corvettes and PvP anyway.
