Wohoo! Finally gonna get around to grinding out some pilot (had JTL for a while but never had a chance to work on pilot) so I launch into space, fly to my mission, and start shooting away. Hit after hit registers on my target, but their shields and hull does not go down at all!! Then I left and tried killing some random Tier 1 stuff i found flying by. I shot at and saw hits registered on the enemy ship (shields flashed every time I hit it) but nothing happened. Im used to having pretty significant lag on sattelite on the ground, but this is ridiculous! Sure the movement is a tad jumpier in space than it was on my friends computer, but because of lag I shoot at and appear to hit targets on my computer but dont do any damage! My friend tried using my internet connection and computer and had the same problem on his account (he is a master pilot). I have never had any problems with the ground game but if space is incompatible with sattelite internet this is sure something I would liked to haveknown before I purchased JTL :-/

Satellite internet - where are you the north pole or some top secret governmental weapons research facility?

Hold on there is a knock at the door!

Make sure you're shooting in the lead (little box that floats out in front of your target), not right at them

I was shooting at the lead and I could see when the lasers hit the target, but it still did no damage.

Oh, and I don't live in the boonies, just 3 miles from the highway the the cable runs down (talk about unlucky) and too far away for DSL.

Move to a real country like mine - 100% broadband coverage and more than half the population live in the countryside - though ive had my broadband for4 years now hehe.

Anyway - there is a considearble amount of invulnerable areas on a ship that when you hit dont give damage (depends on ship type/your weaps/your weap spread)!

Also, the lag in space zones has shot way (and I mean WAAAAAYYYY) up since ROTW came up, it has gone down but not enough. This may be aggravating your problems.

FYI, I have 512 ADSL with avg. 98-99% transmission, 1 gig RAM, a soundblaster card, a 256mb radeon and a 64 bit athlon powering the rig (til my dark side alienware arrives - sometime in July and there are some places where I jerk more than a chicken doing the St.Vitus dance!

Oh and take the onscreen ping monitor with a dose of salt, Ive flown with 30fps and a 3000+ ping!!!

Also dont shoot in the lead box (remember Luke switching his off?) its not perfect - youll have to learn to aim between the lead box and the target. Where you aim is decided by a complex mix of calaculations that run in your subconcious mind and are based on factor including your spee/direction/mass and you enemies speed/direction/mass. A true master can do these calculations np but needs a calculator to add 2 + 2 (the answer is 7.6245735 - right?)!

Satelite connections always have a 1 to 2 second delay due to the distances the signal must travel. This means you will always shoot at the position the enemy was a second ago. SWG has 56k listed as minimum connection speed. You could try a dial-up connection when you're going to play the JTL part of the game.

As for the comments to move to a real country, no broadband company is going to lay a50 mile cable to donkeytown, population 100. Costs are higher then the profits will ever be. Large areas of the states are therefore still bound todial-up or satellite connections.

what you're describing happens to lots of people, satalite or no. (I'm on cable, I still get that occasionally)
You'll have to try strafing your fire over the 'lead' in a line starting on the ship and going out past it till you see the damage ticking off. You'll get used to it eventually.

What about WiMAX isnt it supposed to fill that gap?

This is not entirely your connection. Many people are experiencing this, myself included, and I'm on cable. The devs have not acknowledged this as a problem publically and there is yet to be a fix.

WiMAX has a range of 3 to 10 kilometers. The original poster lives 3 miles from an existing cable and has a good chance that somewhere in the next 2 or 3 years the service will become available to him.At this moment however WiMAX is mostly set up in metropolitan areas (high density of potential customers, more profit) then used as a technology to give broadband to the masses currently devoid from broadband access. The startup costs of new services need to be re-earned before cost perunitgets low enough for less densely populated areas.

Edit: Yes, the problem Wittyalias describes is more common at the moment. In his case it is the satellite connection causing it. I've been working in IT for 5 years now, I'm currently studying for CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associates). I know the pro's and con's of copper, fiber optics, microwave, radio, infrared and satellite connections. Signal travel fromthe base stationto the satellite and from the satellite to his house takes 1 to 2 seconds. His ping will always be 1000+. He can bypass this byusing dial-up for playing JTL and satellite to download the patches and play the ground game where ping is less of an issue.

At one time I had Satellite internet back in 2002, and it's bad for gaming. My Stepfather had gotten it going with Sprint, and later on desided to move it to a house me and 2 friends where renting out from my mother. Namely they desided to give it too us so we'd have free internet when living there, and sadly it sucked for what we where doing namely gaming and heavy downloading. At the time the place was in Chandler AZ and the mini-dish had to be pointed at a group of TV Towers on one of the mountans. However right by our house we had a lovely set of power lines that I believe was part of why this Satellite Internet sucked for us.

Gaming was bad, both my Roommates and myself played games like Counter-Strike and Day of Defeat. Every now and then the game would just stop for us, I mean you'd be running on a beach then it would stop and you'd see everyone run all over, it was weird for the most part. Also I was playing Ultima Online at the time and gawd UO just didn't like the Satellite Internet, UO had my toon fighting a Dragon and out of nowhere the game wouldn't let me move or cast a spell, but I could see everything going on around me. Made PvP and PvE next to useless, anyhow it also loved going down on me and my roommates. Anytime alot of downloading was going on namely useing KaZaA (again this was back in the day.) it would die for 5 to 10 mins then come back up.

Anyhow after doing some testing we found out why the Satellite Internet sucked for us. We believed the powerlines where part of it, we also felt that when the guys from Sprint came to put the dish up they didn't have it pointed at those towers all the way. Packet Loss was the thing killing us, we had a great con, however Sprint wanted to get on a ton of 'Unknown Servers' that gave us a high Packet Loss norm was around 10 to 25% however there where times where it got up to 75% loss.

I'd call support and see what they can do.

Satellite is never good for any real-time gaming. Normal network latency for cable or DSL to most games is < 80ms (round trip), maybe as high as 150ms or so for dial. Because the satellite is in geosynchronous orbit, which is approximately 2/3 the distance to the moon, it is between 0.5 and 1 light seconds away (not sure of the exact number). Since your network packets have to make the round-trip twice (up to the satellite, down again, then to the game server, then the response from the server also has to go up to the satellite, and down again to you), it adds a minimum of 2 seconds round-trip travel time to your network packets. This sort of latency will always create a disparity between the displayed position and actual (server) position of your targets.

This latency isn't terribly noticable for web surfing and e-mail, or file transfer... but for anything real-time, it's a killer (this includes telephony services like VOIP, as well as gaming). The ground game isn't a twitch-shooter like space is, so it's not as bad.

General rule of thumb: Satellite == bad for gaming.

I realize that sattelite isnt as suited to gaming as DSL or cable, but I have had no problems with the ground game, though lag is definetly noticable. If this appears to be a known issue that occurs to some degree on all connections than I hope it is something that is worked on and fixed. I would much rather NPC spaceships appear to have "jumpy" movement as is visible on the ground when you lag, but to be shooting it and seeing hits when nothing happens makes it totally unplayable.
