Thread: Mouse and Keyboard pilots
Sure, just remap the controls to accept mouse 1 and 2 for roll left(?) roll right(?). I remapped all of mine to make it more efficient and intuitive. Default is q and e i believe.
You can remap anything that has a control through options/controls/keymap/all and sometimes rework stuff soe breaks by remapping to the same key via macro and 'custom'.

Thanks for responding, Angry
I see what you are saying, but how do I get the client to accept mouse movement as a key binding? It's not working for me...do I perhaps need to unplug the joystick?

I think mouse movement is perma-set for pitch up/down yaw left/right. Using a mouse for a unidirection command is asking too much. But i need to ask ... how could you possibly expect to handle your ship with controls like that?
Sorry I misunderstood the question, but the unorthodox nature of what you're asking caused me to read what I assumed, not what you asked.

Some pilots who've come up through atmospheric flight sims have gotten used to the real world control configuration of Pitch and Roll via stick. Yaw is actually very difficult to do in a real world fighter. Wouldn't be the first time I've heard someone using it.
Your best bet with Mouse and Keyboard is to two hand it. I keep my left hand on the 1-4 and QWE and S. 1-4 for weapons, Q/E for roll, W for decel, S for accel (yes, this is backwards, its something I've done since the Beta for JTL). Really the only choice you've got. Mouse and Keyboard works much better with P/Y, which is really more like a true space sim.

A good, and quite valid question Angry...and believe me, I am in your court with that opinion, heh.
Let me tell you my current setup:
My joystick has the twist handle function, and it defaults to controlling the roll, while the stick itself handles the same as the mouse does. This is the setup I use, and it allows me to maintain continuous rolling motion with any maneuver, if I choose. I have been messing with swapping the roll and yaw on the stick (making it function like a real fighter plane's), and I do ok, but I just can't fly the same...and I have to rely way too much on yaw for targetting, which is terrible, to say the least. I too, do not know how anyone could fly with the joystick set up in that manner, unless yaw is a bigger part of their playstyle than rolling is. A friend of mine does this, and he is a good pilot, but I have no idea how, heh.
Back to the mouse...if I could set up the mouse to roll instead of yaw, I could maintain my flying style only using one hand (I would have yaw on the side mouse buttons, most likely), and use my left hand on my Cyborg's throttle control, which also gives me easy access to 3 of the side buttons (shield shunt, target component, and target nearest enemy player, for me). I would have the superior targetting ability of the mouse, with the superior throttle control of the joystick all in one package. That was the goal, anyway, but it does not look like it's going to happen.
The Cyborg gets my vote as the best joystick on the market currently, btw...it's not terribly expensive (40-60 bucks), it's very solid, and has enough buttons that you can map all of your most important functions, leaving you rarely, if ever, reaching for the keyboard. The twist handle makes it that much better. And...it's black and silver, with a blue light, heh.
Edit: When I say that yaw targetting is terrible, I mean with a joystick...targetting in any fashion with the mouse is heavenly ![]()

Isn't there a new Microsoft mouse out with a wheel that tips left and right? If so, perhaps that could be used to give you your roll left/right while using a mouse.
You cant map that left right wheel to anything but scroll left/right for windows apps. I also doesn't work in all apps. I was hoping to use it as a straifing control for first person shooters but NOOOOO.
I use a ThrustMaster TacticalBoard which is a special gaming keyboard for the left hand... it rocks! I find it very hard to justify using a joystick with this.
It also rocks for general gaming in SWG and it has so many keys you can map... perfect gaming tool ever!
Anybody else use one of those bad boys?
Ive used keyboard for 99.9% of my flying here because it was much more intuitive. The style of jtl is more fps than flight sim with lack of stalls, red outs, blackouts, etc., and the maneuvers in pvp or pve are far beyond anything youll find in a flight sim. Over-yaw or over-roll can stall you in a flight sim, itll never happen here, so use it to its fullest.
Try remapping the keys for left hand/right hand. All my combat droid commands/chat target macros are on F1-F4. Cycle componets on 2, cycle weapon 1, fire ords (which i never use ords) on 4, speed adjusts, roll, etc are all left hand while firing and yaw/pitch are right hand. Boosters remapped to macro and 'custom' on thespacebar because soe likes to break boosters alot.
I'm not bragging when i say im undefeated in DS in my JSF (JSF to JSF) and the kill ratio for me in my xwing is high enough as well vs the same talented pilots. The reason i mention it at all is due to how many times ive had people tell me i cannot possibly expect to compete in pvp without a jstick. I have proved them wrong many times ...
After many fights people ask alot of questions and when i mention kboard and mouse, they seem to take the ideaand attempt it as well. Just something to think about.
