Thread: Imp Gunboat Blindspot

Does any have like a screenshot or something showing where the blind spot is located for imp gunboats? The most info I've been able to come up with is behind and under. I've tried finding " behind and under" only to continuously get my nose pounded in. Any help or reference to another post is appreciated.

Just stay on his six at about 540-550m.... Boats won't be able to hit you, but your guns will hit it. If you get any closer, expect a warm welcome

That would be 531- 565 behind him and just match speed and bump it up 1 notch and down 1 notch as nessesary.

Thanks for the info. So to make sure I got this right, there isn't a blindspot so you just stay out of range of his weapons?

There is both. The entire underside is a blindspot, or you can stay out of range and plink. Personally, I find it far easier to fly underneath, do a tailstand, matchspeed, and target weapon2 (the tailgun). I pound the ship as it flys overhead, and usually end up behind him just as the tailgun pops. With tier5 gunboats, I sometimes need to make two passes, by lining up underneath again and repeating. This ends up being far faster than tailing the gunboat, as you have a much easier target to hit.

My personal favorite is to fly under with a turreted ship, match speed, fly parallel (usually rolled on my side) and let the turret gunner(s) have at it. The blindspot is big enough to park an MP ship in. I've bee practicing with my gunners so that we can even take out a looping gunboat.

Yup, On the imp gunboats, it under and up to 45 degree angle, on rebel GB's it the whole bottom, and almost directly behind, rebel gunboats have a huge blind spot. Look at siggy had plenty of practice killing these things.

One thing about imp gunboats, they usually travel in 3-ship clusters. Even though you might be in the blind spot of the one you are shooting at, the one beside it might have a bead on you.

.......Top...........
........................
......._\/____/|.....
...<(____-_-_)=...<- Flying that way <-
....../..............
........................
.......Bottom........

This, if you couldn't tell, is my weak ascii representation of an Imperial Gunboat. There are several types of Imp GUs and there are two main ways to assault them.

1st way: Use the crutch that involves how your weapons shoot farther than the GU's engagement rage (i.e. sit outside his range, inside your range, and shoot)

2nd way: Use the smallish blindspot underneath and behind the Imp GU to hit it from a position it can't hit you back.

........................
........................
......._\/____/|.....
...<(____-_-_)=...<- Turret 2, the Rear facing one
....../..............
........................
......^ Chin Turret (can't think of the turret #)

The Chin turret can aim forward and can arc down to vertical. Any area below and at all in-front of the GU and the Chin turret will anil you.

The Rear turret can aim behind and can arc down about 45 degrees. Any area behind and not sufficiently underneath it's arc and it will nail you.

This leaves an arc of space underneath and behind Imperial Gunboats where none of their ...seven? turrets can hit you but you can hit it.

My preferred method is flying maybe 600m directly below the GU, turning up to face it, getting within 500m or so, matching speed, and pounding it. As you fire, you will 'drift' toward the rear (because it is going forward and you are going mostly 'up'). When you get too close to the rear turret, it will take a shot at you. Be prepared to get some speed and get back to that 600m below spot to 'rinse and repeat.' The ored in which you blow components is up to you - I tend to go with the Engine first, unless there are other factors.

Oh, also... I wrote a bit about Imp GUs.... here

*Edit* Yeah, I'm having some trouble with even a weak ascii diagram

Ways to tell top from bottom.

from a distance look at the nose and tail, the chin guns look different than the smooth line of the top of the cockpit. The top tailfin is longer than the bottom.

closer, look at the midsection of the hull, there is a strip with two blobs (turrets) on the top, and the bottom is almost blank white.

Ways to tell top from bottom.

Also, there is a mappable key to 'auto-level' your ship. The default is (ctrl)+(slash). Since NPC ships make every attempt to orient themselves properly while flying, 'up' after an auto-level should be the Gunboat's up (also works well when approaching a corvette and you want to head to the Turret 5 side).

About telling top from bottom ... you can also use ctrl / and you'll auto-orient (pretty much) to the same as the gunboat.
