Looking for advice on my ship configuration from a defense perspective.
I'm running a KSE and she runs really well against single fighter starships, but I get the crap kicked out of me when I go up against anything larger (gunboats and such).
I'm not saying I was to be able to sit there and take a beating forever, but when I'm positioning myself in the right blindspot or doing a quick strafe to get a few shots in, I feel like I should be able to take a few hits and still survive.
Right now I'm running 2100/2100 shields with a recharge of around 10 or so I think, and armor that floats around the 1000 or so. I'm almost thinking of downgrading my weapons from lvl 10s to something with a little less mass and putting everything in to defense that I can.
Any suggestions on this? I was hanging out in DS the other night and would get blow up within a few seconds each time I tried to engage. I'm shunting and moving all over the place. It feels like a configuration problem for some reason.

You can go to an REd L8 reward shield, but that's only 2550 shield energy. Basically, you're a big target and you're easy to hit. Try not to get so close to the gunboat. What are you trying to engage in DS?

Pretty much anything really. I'll see a few gunboats, or some deciminators, or whatever else. Heck even if a nice squad of T5 tie's come after me I lose my shields pretty darned quick.

Those tier 5 ships can tear you up real quick if you get a group of them on you. going to an RE'd level 8 reward shield would help. I think your shield recharge rate could/should be higher than it is too. Do you use the standard droid programs? Reactor, cap, engine, weapon overload all level 3 with cap to shield shunt 3 and 4?
Sounds like you are rebel?
If so and you haven't picked up engine and weapon overlaod 3, DO IT. Engine overload 3 makes you ridiculously fast and maneuverable and with weapon overload 3 you could easily downgrade to 2 level 8 cannons and still have great firepower. This would free up space for a great booster and a couple heavier armor plates to help you survive in case they do get through your shields. Your capacitor should be small and great. I have a level 2 that I had RE'd to 1150 energy and only 1230 mass with a 38.2 recharge.....add in cap overload 3 and you got a cap you can't drain with 2 blasters and TONS of energy to shunt to shields. Don't know how "uber" my cap is but I have seen plenty other level 2 RE'd caps that fall in around here too.
Nothing is gonna chane that your ship has a huge arse tho!

load some seismic missiles or spacebombs in, target engines on each ship (dont destroy em till they all disabled) and fire away

Great advice, thanks.
Yeah, I'm running the standard programs on my flight computer (am Free Lance). Got EO3, WeapCapIII, Shunt4, and WO3. I need to hook up with my local Shipwright and get some stuff REed once I have it all together. (I'm at the point where I think my alt may need to become a shipwright).
One of the big problems I have is that my reward engine has serious decay so it only has 56 armor left. Once I loot two more Lvl 6 engines, I'll get that thing bumped up in armor and hit points. As it stands right now, one shot past my shields and armor and I'm dead in the water.

Just a side note, a recharge of 10 is pretty bad for a 2100 shield. Is it a T10 shield? You can get recharge up to 15-18 easily.

Yeah I'm sorta thinking I need to improve on the recharge. At work now, need to go look at the level. I think it's a player made level 9 actually, about 42 or 47K mass.

thanks much.
Doubt I'll be able to get my hands on in Chilastra, so I'll probably take my alt up the rebel line just for the rewards (again! lol)

REing your engine's a good call, it'll add a bit of speed and a modest amount of PYR, both of which are a sort of secondary defense that'll help prevent you getting hit in the first place. Along those lines, how's your booster? A crafted level 1 with 30+ speed can be a great way to get in and out on a strafe run in minimal time.
Other than that, I'm with these guys about getting that level 8 reward shield. Even un-RE'd, it'll have the same mass with better HP than the one you're running now. RE'd, you can get it down to 30K or less without too much trouble, with a 15+ recharge rate to boot.

The 2400 strength level 8 reward shield is a reward for freelancers. Hope you still have it. And don't forget armor. I fly with 1K front/back armor even in my 50K mass Interceptor, so a 210K mass Firespray should mount the same or better.
