I am a 4444 rebel pilot. I have never ever owned a droid before but I want to use one on my x-wing. What are all of the components I will need to have and how will I use/program it? Is there a post someone can refer me to? I'm really confused by the whole droid/flight computer thing.

they help you do things (like toggle shields) ... droids are good

I think you should wait until you are Ace though (since you are so close) ... just get the level 6 Astromech ... have a DE make you a cool one that can help you on ground and in space with all the bells and whistles.

Droid Commands serve about the same purpose as Doc/Entertainer/Food buffs on the ground. They make life easier on you when fighting the the high level enemies. You can go without them as you can on the ground for PvE, but you end up with about the same results...a much longer battle with more risk.

The big difference is that everyone can use them that has a droid. I wish they would do the same kinda thing with doc buffs...that is, have a medical droid that can apply doc buffs to you as a non-doc. Maybe make it so only doctors can load them up in your droid but you can use them when and where you wish simply by pulling out the loaded droid and telling it to buff you. Anyways...I really digressed here.

But droid commands really add to your fun and the fact that you waited until now to use them is both inpressive and scarry at the same time . It will be a whole new space game for you when you start using them.
