the last mission i did for rebel tier 4 involved taking down a gunboat. i asked a master friend of mine for help, and he zoomed in and took it out along with a bunch of the fighters before i could even get there, you might wanna try that

I am working on my master box/getting out of teir 4 for the smuggler alliance and I keep getting plastered by the CorSec gunship on the second part of the mission. What is the trick to taking these things down solo? I have gotten close but always end up space dust or disabled and then space dust. Any suggestions? (besides bring friends)

Bring a friend.
I had trouble with that gunship, too...it's really aggressive and never flies in a straight line, except in pursuit of someone. One of my friends brought his X-wing and we tag-teamed it...got hammered, but we did eventually take it out. That thing's really tough to solo.
Your best bet would be hit-and-run, I suppose...move in fast, hammer at it from behind, then break off and boost away. Careful, though...that thing can hit like 500, so you're not going to pull away from it fast.

I did this one solo. The key is get it disabled as fast as possible. stay just within range for a quick getaway if needed and be ready with IFF. Get the rear to front adjust and the cap to shield programs and just keep pounding on it until its disabled. Expect some armor damage and ignore the bright red eject button. After its disabled get out of range and let shields build up. You should actually be able to go repair at this point and come back jumping with the system, though I didn't need to.
I have what I call a bombing shield crafted with all points going towards front shielding. This coupled with the droid programs proved pretty effective.
