This is just one of those "something to think about" posts, in case any Devs happen by.
So I decided to do the Vaksai starfighter quest out of Kashyyk, because it sounded fun, and I actually love the look of the Vaksai (and its stats, hehe). I'm a Tier 4 privateer pilot, and while some of the missions were a little...interesting, none were so hard that I was overly frustrated.
I made it to the last mission in the sequence, a very challenging one where the goal is to disable a corvette so its crew can recapture it after dealing with a fighter escort. I messed it up the first time just because I didn't realize there was a time-table, and the corvette jumped out before I finished killing off its systems. Hehe, I felt a little silly, but started over.
Now bear in mind that I'm only a Tier 4 pilot, I've never taken a corvette before. I've read enough to understand the strategy, and it was tough, but I took out turret 5, carefully picked off the other turrets from the safety of their blind spots...wasted the shield generators, then faded back and took out her engines. She stopped! She coasted to a halt and the crew re-took her! I lost my armor, and some of my systems took a bit of a scorching...but I did it! /cheer
So the crew repaired the ship, the stats on all its systems returned to 100%. I smiled in relief, and formed up to escort her back to base. When the first wave of attack fighters jumped in, I chuckled, thrilled to finally be escorting something that could help defend itself.
And then it happened. As I accelerated to attack speed to take on these fools who couldn't possibly stand a chance against me AND a fully armed and operational corvette...they fired. They fired once. The corvette blew up.
Man, I hate this game.

Not sure why it blew up, possibly cause you destroyed all the weapons when you aren't supposed to. Every guide posted here stresses how you should only destroy gun 5 and some of them say to leave it also.

Hmm. Okay, interesting thought. If I ever calm down enough, I might try that, hehe.
It was weird, though, the corvette was firing on the enemy ships. It just didn't seem to help.

Well... -dont- disable her guns... for some reason they wont regenerate when she powers up
take out the shields from front beneath her
then kill engine and hang back until shes captured..
It can be done... Ive done it twice solo and helped with mission like 7-8 times
Hint... when the gunboats spawn hit one once... then boost out... continue to make h2h passes until engine is out.. then kill it from blind spot

The reactor is the problem. The enemy fighters all go right for the reactor, and if they get a couple clean passes in, yeah it's going to pop. Priority one is to keep the fighters off that ship.
When the Tier 5 gunboats (yes, plural) show up, play tag with them to keep them busy, but they're such bad shots that they rarely hit the reactor.

*Sigh* I hadn't even made it to the gunboats yet, lol.
Still, that's some useful advice. I'll give it a try (in like a week). Thanks!

Take the vette, doing as little damage as possible.
If the privateer mission is anything like the rebels heavy xwing mission, you didnt even get to the fun part yet.

There's also the other recourse for the Vaksai mission that DOES work.
First off, unless something's changed since last patch, the turrets DO respawn. Even Turret 5. The caveat is that the OTHER components don't regenerate (shields, for instance)
Here's the trick:
1. Take out the fighter escort, preferably leading them to the underside of the ship so you only have to worry about Turret 5. Don't slow down for anything - the slower you travel, the more accurate turrets will be. I've been fired upon by the Freedom Station and nearby gunboats simultaneously in DS - when I'm going 1100kph, I just have to evasively maneuver - when I'm going 200kph, I'm dead - the targetting AI LOVES slow ships - anything that travels faster than the current NPC max speed of 989kph seems to confuse the hell out of turrets.
2. Take out every turret except the useless side ones.
3. Follow the Vette on its track, constantly keeping track of your distance to the Kashyyykian starbase. Once you hit about 4k, disable the engines. 4k is a nice round number, since supposedly it hypers out at about 3.7k and you fail the mission.
4. The ship will get taken over, and you'll hit the starbase just as a SINGLE Tier 5 gunboat spawns, but by then the Vette will be so close to the hyperpoint that you'll just have to distract it until you complete the mission.
But doing this the "right" way is insane - I disabled and took over one about 45 seconds after it hypered in for a guildie and there were FOUR Tier 5 gunboats. I'm good, but you can't take on more than two of those without suffering AT LEAST *SOME* armor damage, and at about four, you start taking component damage as well.

Also, if you have access to Deep Space before doing this mission, it behooves you to do two things to better yourself as a pilot:
1. Practice disabling Vettes - there should be a good number of them in there that have lost their fighter cover to farmers and still have relatively high condition left.
2. Purposefully piss off the dumb gunboats' "bad sides" (since the undersides of the line-fliers are currently bugged and the turrets don't fire on you) to learn how to evasively maneuver and confuse the turret AI. Don't think of this as total preparation, though - the T5s that spawn on the Vaksai mission travel around 900kph, turn like fighters, and like missiles if you stay in one place long enough for them to lock you up. It's just a valuable skill to have to learn how to shuck and jive around turrets in their firing envelope.
