I've been thinking about how badly I'd like my own private space station to keep my ships on and use as my home. I came up with an idea that I'm still fleshing out.
If you've mastered pilot for all three squadrons for your chosen faction (e.g. if you're a Rebel pilot and you've done all three Reb squadrons), you can talk to a special NPC about setting up a space station. There would be several designs to choose from (see the different mining outposts--but only ones that have a hanger somewhere), but they would all have the same capabilities.
COST--
Initial investment for a station would be one million prestige. Once the prestige is given, a station is placed in your inventory and you are allowed to "place" it from a POB. Once it has been "placed", freighter hyper in and construct the station. (Takes half an hour, gives an RP feeling. Freighters are unattackable.)
Maintenance also draws from prestige at a rate of 5k/hour, which comes out to around 840k prestige per week. That makes it expensive enough that non-dedicated pilots won't be able to afford to have such a station. If a GCW sector-controlled metagame is implemented, perhaps the losing side's stations have a higher maintenance rate due to the danger of providing supplies to it?
Basically, it translates into a pilot using his influence with his chosen faction to persuade the powers-that-be to provide the power, water, etc that a station needs to operate.
If the player goes to 0 prestige, he or she has 7 days to get prestige back for station maintenance. During this time, the station cannot be used for repairs. The prestige used for maintenance must also be of the right faction. (e.g. if I set up a station as an Alliance pilot, I can't use Imperial prestige to maintain it.)
PLACING--
Stations would be restricted from being placed in the Endor, Dathomir, and Kashyyyk sectors. Perhaps maintenance higher in "dangerous" systems like Dantooine and Karthakk?
LANDING RIGHTS--
The owner/operator of the station can make the station public or private. Public stations would allow anyone to land there, use any vendors aboard, and use the repair facilities. (More on that later.)
Private stations would be handled two fold. First, the owner provides a droid to act as traffic control. The droid will then speak to any vessels hailing the station. If the hailing vessel is piloted by someone with permission to land, the droid will then allow them to land normally. If the hailing pilot is *not* on the admit list, the droid will ask for a landing code which the owner provided the droid. If the hailing pilot has it, then he is allowed to land or repair. If not, he is denied.
REPAIRS--
Player stations could be used for repairs. If the owner repairs at a station, he draws prestige down in a similar fashion to credits. A repair that would cost five thousand credits at a regular station would cost 5k prestige. Repairs would be the standard station repairs that cause decay, though perhaps at triple cost the repairs would be "reduced decay" or something.
Non-owners of the station that have permission to repair is handled differently. They are allowed to repair at a standard repair cost in credits, which is given to the faction that owns the station (not the owner), but the owner of the station can also add a private repair fee onto the base repair cost that goes into his own pocket.
If a GCW sector-control metagame is implemented, perhaps repairs are impossible for disadvantaged stations? (E.g. a Rebel-controlled station in an Imperial-controlled system is not able to repair, due to shortage of supplies?)
MINING--
The droid controller can also be set up to buy mined asteroid resources, similarly to the NPC stations. The player can provide the price per CPU offered. This would allow shipwrights easier access to asteroid resources.
PROs: Use for prestige; gives serious pilots a possibility of owning their own private station; good for shipwrights trying to get asteroid resources.
CONs: Pretty unforgiving on maintenance; may still see too many stations "crowding" space; may allow repairs in too many places ina sector, making high-level missions too easy.

This would give me a reason to fly again. SoE wouldnt do that for us, ever.
As much as I would be willing to sell my soul for another two or three subscription periods for this idea, I know it will not happen in any way shape or form. If you want space stations, join EVE-Online. They do it nicely.

Repairs seem a bit much. I'd be happy if they tossed three stations out there, one over Tatooine, one of Corellia, and one over Naboo, and had instanced housing in them. Rip the code strait out of EQ2. Have different house sizes based on how much prestige/ how many credits you want to spend. Pretty much the whole housing system from EQ2 would work perfectly for this.

Looks all very well but 1 million presitge is a bit low, i'd would aim for about 20 mill or so

I would much rather have instanced housing in the NPC cities on the ground. In space, it would be wonderful to own a small outpost somwhere so you can use it as your workshop for maintaining and upgrading your ship. I just have flashbacks to the Episode 1: Starfighter game where one of the characters owned her own little station. I just want something like that.

Even with the astronomical costs, space would still get cluttered with these stations quickly, though. Having one station per system (or maybe two or three in different areas, to cater to different price ranges/factions/room styles/some other variant) would keep space open and free of clutter, while still allowing us the ability to live among the stars.
