Awesome idea.
I have always liked the idea of being able to take a starfighter/snubfighter and dock it to a POB ship.
This is an awesome idea, and i don't think it would be unbalanced at all.
For example:
You have a mineing ship with a crew and a 47k cargo hold. Say 6-7people in the Y-8. Then you have three fighters, with cargo holds of 1700. If the players in the fighters can fill their holds every 6 minutes on average. It would still take those fighters 55 minutes to fill up the Y-8's hold, then another 6 minutes to refill their hold. So basically you are looking at 9-10 people in space for an hour, and in that time they will mine about 52,000 units.
Now if you just had 1 peron in a fighter mineing 1700 units at a time. Say it takes 10 minutes to launch/mine/land/unload. For that single person to mine 52,000 units would take 4.6 hours. Three solo fighters it would take an hour and a half.
Even though your only really saveing a half hour in time, by adding 6-7 more people. I can almost promise it would be alot more fun that just straight up solo mineing. The teamwork aspect would be cool, and when your done you could always make a deepspace run and give the SD or Space Station a run for it's money.
They Y-8 is probably the coolest multiplayer ship, it just needs a reason to be flown. I think fighters docking and dropping off resources would give it that reason.
I actually already made a post awhile ago about this:

I'd really love to see this implemented.
Remember, someone will prolly just use an alt that sits in the Y-8 just keeping it in place while the main char mines and drops loads of ore into the Y-8 hold.
Think about how fast this could go with a full 8 person group, only 1 in the Y-8
7 X 1500+ per load
of course this could be a good way to lower the price of asteroid-using items

I Fully equipped my Y8 with the new elites components and 5 Y8 class mining lasers, we were a crew of 5 ... It was fun but not effective at all, the problem being that tractor beam do not seem to work properly when equipped on Y8
My suggestion would be to use The Y8 to fire on the main asteroid and on the first Asteroids chunks, then use some other ships equipped with tractor beam to gather the lesser asteroid chunks
BUT what i really would like to see implemented would be the ability for those ships to DOCK the Y8 and unload their cargo into the Y8 one ... That would give the Y8 a new reason to exist : Save the travel time for the other ships.
I think it would also look really nice, With the Y8 being some sort of Main Mining station and lot of other ship working around it.
I don t think it would be hard to implement as dock already exists in the game and is currently only used in quest, think it would be a great thing to allow it betwin Y8 and other ships too
P.S.: Sorry for my bad english, french player, hope you could understand what i meant ^^

Yes I can understand what you mean (half french canadian =p). Anyways, it really depends on how you go about using the tractor beam to get it to work. If you want it in the pilots chair, one its impracticle and 2 its bugged, it will not work in the pilots gun. I have throughly tested a tractor beam (reward) inside one of the chest turrets and it worked perfectly, even from 230 meters. Try equipping your y-8 with a mining laser in chest gun 1 anda tractor beam in chest 2. Give the pilot a laser, follow asteroid chunks, and let your chest gunners do the work. Thats the minimum, the tail turret is no good for mining, it was intended to be a defense turret. The Top bridge gun, you can keep as a mining laser or defense turret, your preference. Effective in group mining yes, practicle with one y-8 ship mining yes, practical mining something in a hurry, no. The y-8 is fine and needs nothing fixed with it. However I do agree with a few ideas on how to improve it.
