I was just going to over-haul my pob ship guide and I may still do that but just to post something simple and easy so people can catch up with the y-8 changes heres a list of to-do's and considers!
- Use elite mining lasers(y-8) in order to mine, must be crafted with asteroid resources from a shipwright.
- Depending on where you mine load 4 mining lasers and 1 regular gun for defense.
- weapon0 is top gun
- weapon1 is lower turret on the back
- weapon2 is the pilots main cannon
- weapon3 isfront turret 1
- weapon4 is front turret 2
- The default cargo hold for y-8 is 5k, you can craft as high as 45k or more i believe.
- For mining in systems with bandits around tier 4 you should consider swapping the top gun with a regular blaster, or call in some extra help with fighter escorts.
- Best way to mine, or so i've seen, have the pilot pull into about 450m of the asteroid, the pilot fires one shot, to see which direction the asteroid chunks will shoot off, rotate your ship accordingly so that the top gunner and 2 front gunners can hit the chunks as they come off before they get out of range. From here just have the main pilot break the chunks off and let the gunners do what they can, if they miss some they miss some, because the asteroids instantly respawn you can basically spam the asteroid with the pilots cannon and just let the gunners get what they can untill your cargo is full. With this method i have filled up a 5k hold with just 3 gunners, at a fastest speed of 20 minutes. Sometimes it goes a lot slower if the asteroid is stubbern and shoots it off various directions.
- Bandits like to attack the rear of the y-8 at almost even altitude using this method above, every so often if needed tilt the ship forward and back so the top and or rear gunner can get better angles when the bandits turn and start their run.
- Make sure the gunners don't fire on bandits untill they get close to about 300m or less, by doing this you have a higher chance of accuracy because after the first shot or 2 bandits usually pull off, closer you let them get, the more shots you can get on them.
Thats just a quicky set of tips, if you have some info to add reply to this post so others can learn from our collective experience =)

Large cargo holds for the y-8 can exceed 47k. Incase you want to update.

That sufficiently fails to suck.

I was just going to say the same thing. Mine is 47k and change. I'm not sure if I'll ever fill it though, lol. If it takes 20 minutes to fill a 5k hold, I can't see me and a gunner or two sitting at an asteroid for 3 hours.
Interesting mining method proposed though. Now that I think about it, this is similar to what I was doing solo last night. I'd sit nearly stationary, just a tiny bit of throttle, break off a chunk, blast it, blast as many small pieces as I could, then turn back when it went out of range. My extraction rate was not great, but I think it will get better. Plus at one point I could barely see with all the tier-1 pirates and droid fighters firing on me.
The tinted window bug is really annoying though, lol.

Unfortunatly....it is still much much better to mine solo in a fighter with a 1550 cargo hold rather than using a Y-8. I can do 5 trips in the 20mins it takes a y-8 to do 1 default (5000).
=/ stupid SOE lol!
