Are there any tutorials on this? Or should I just look at all the recent threads to get a general idea on how to put my fighter together?

I don't think there's anything specific, but I would bet there's a post on just about every class of ship within the first 2 or 3 pages. There are pretty simple guidlines to follow:

Start with Engines, Weapons, Shields. The best you can reasonably squeeze on.
Then a Mid-Sized capacitor, Level 2 or 4 is usually all you need, if you can find the right one. Same story for boosters - 1, 2 or 4. Reactors ususally a pilot shouldn't have to go abouve Mark II, unless you're flying something heavy with a pile of crafted parts. DI, you sacrifice speed for mass, but you do what you gotta do.

Armor, at least for me, is a luxury, and I only use it if I have mass left over.

If you don't already know one, find a Shipwright and become his/her friend. You're going to need someone to Reverse Engineer parts for you, because any Pilot worth his salt has a ship outfitted with mostly RE'd Equipment.

I've been a Talusian, a Tumbler, and a Tailor. I used to camp and I loved to scout.
Now I make ships and fly them.
