For me what would make space mining better is if the quest to start it wasnt so damn hard, lol.

Smaller asteroids that don't lag the entire zone because they're 3/4 the size of Corvettes.

Here's my two creds:
- Get rid of the little circles that surround the mining laser shots 2/3 of the way out to the horizon. Half the time they look like impacts on the little asteroid bits that we are trying to hit. The obscure the target. I understand that you wanted something to differentiate the mining laser beams from the other weapon beams, but make them thicker or brighter or something, don't obscure our targets.
- Give us a command / button to unload our mining cargo hold so we don't have to open our datapad to do it. The radial menues are laggy, especially when the system has to detect whether additional options exist for the item you are holding your mouse over. It is just a pain. Even a new button in the Manage ship screen to "Unload" cargo would be much better (and while you are at it, please put an "Exit" or "Done" button in the ship terminal windows).
- Change the colors for the boxes that surround asteroids, asteroidchunks, and use yet a third color for the boxes around the little bits that break off when you blow up the chunks. I know the chunks and bits move differently than the main asteroids in the background (which just sit there) but I often have trouble telling which is which unless I completely stop moving my ship. Sometimes, with the ship moving in a straight line, it is hard to tell what is what because all the neutral ships in the background have the same blue brackets around them and they move in different directions just like the chunks and bits.
- Tone down the effects of gravity on the asteroid chunks and bits. Look, we know that the course of these objects will be affected by the gravitational pull of other objects around them, but unless they are orbitting something extremely massive, they are not gonna change direction suddenly. The game seems to (mostly) use the same physical laws to govern ship movement in space, so why are these asteroid cunks and bits acting as if they have little maneuvering thrusters on them? Unless they bounce off another asteroid or a ship, they should continue in pretty much straight lines.
- Sometimes the pirates spawn way too often... or there are just too many hostiles spawned in the area of the asteroids. I had to try all four hyperspace destinations in the Endor system before I found a direction from which I could approach without getting harassed by hostiles patrolling the routes to the asteroids... to the point where I had to give up or die. Once I got there the pirates spawned so often that I had to hyper out or die, especially when all the flying around trying to kill them or evade them brought me within range of other nearby hostiles. At one point the pirates were spawning every other time I shot a chunk off an asteroid.
Well, that's my list. What's yours?

These are particle effects, and you can tone them down or even turn them off from the options dialog (ctrl-O).

I don't agree with this--even in real life, the gravity of an asteroid is not significant enough to be considered. If I blast a chunk off an asteroid, those forces would be significantly greater than that of the forces due to gravity.

Don't mean to sound harse, but the more precious asteroid resources aren't supposed to be easy to mine. Please don't whine and complain about this--every time someone does, the devs nerf it and take all the fun out of it. If you can't handle the pirates, don't mine in those sectors. Alternatively, I recommend you take a friend with you to defend you while you mine.

I would like two things. First, fix the Y-8 so that it can serve the role as a true mining platform. Second, fix the effects of mining lasers and tractor beams.
