I'm currently up against one of those gunboat missions, and just had a couple of guns RE'd (there was a small mishap, but that's neither here nor there). My first attempt at the mission was with the L7 reward gun, not RE'd, and I ran out of time. Do you think I should go with the L7 RE or the L8 RE ... the L8 has maybe a 10% edge in firepower, but twice the mass. Also, if I add a spacebomb launcher, is Mark 1 enough or do I really need Mark 2? If I use the L7 gun, I can fit a Mark 2, if I use the L8 and a lighter armour, I can use the Mark 1.
I suppose the gun stats might be a good idea:
L7 gun:
Drain 2136
Mass 14036
Damage 1986-3071
vs. Shields .644
.vs Armour .647
Energy/Shot 24.4
Refire .317
L8 gun:
Drain 1940
Mass 28303
Damage 2507-3876
vs. Shields .680
.vs Armour .680
Energy/Shot 13.4
Refire .390

It would help to know what level the gunboat is, so we can guage how hard or soft the target is. Also how much free mass are you working with on the TIE?

It's a Tier 4 gunboat (Tier 4 mission, and the other 10 ships make life interesting too). I'm within 1.2k mass of full up with the L8 gun loaded, but have rear armour around 10k mass ... and that's really the only mass I can easily spare. At that, I also had a L6 capacitor RE'd and THAT cut 7k mass at almost no cost (I was using a Mark IV crafted before).

Use the L8 gun, and mk1 spacebombs. if you strip some shielding before you launch the bomb, you should be able to do respectable damage to a critical component in short order, then pick off escorts at will. In theory....

It's just as well I took the L8 gun, I never managed a lock-on for the space bombs ... I lost pretty much all my shielding, but succeeded.

You could also scrounge a couple k of mass by finding a decent lvl 4 or even lvl 2 capacitor instead of the lvl 6. With Cap overload and weapon overload a good 2 or 4 capacitor is all you need.
And next time i'll try to reply in a timely manner. sorry.
