my friend hasnt flown in a long time im trying to help him level but he doesnt know what squadron he is in

There are only 3 possibilities (after looking at the skill tree), check each starting trainer.

...has mastered the Pilot profession

Kryxal Lightsky - Radiant - Cancelled Dec. 7
Kagami Lightingdark - Radiant - Cancelled Dec. 7
Kikuko Inoue - Starsider - Cancelled Dec. 7
Momoko - Radiant - Cancelled Aug. 22

Well, the best way to tell is to ask if he remembers what pilot trainer started him off. If so, it's just a quick look at the Pilot FAQ, and your question will be answered.
