I don't know if this idea has been tossed around before. How about letting fighters dock with the Y-8 to unload astroid cargo into the Y-8. Would make the Y-8's useful.

1550 fighter hold -> 30000 Y-8 hold = 20 dockings

You can configure small fighters(2 guns) with a mining laser and tractor beam, Y-8 with big defensive guns for the bandits.

I see a lot of potential for co-operative play with this one.

Sounds cool.

I was thinking it would be fun if there was a docking bay you could land a couple fighters in. One for mining and one for defense for when those pesky guys jump out and try to kill you when you are mining When you get attacked you could launch fighters instead of having to try to use the turretts.
