Could someone fill me in on what these options do. Is it a handling modifiction or for looks? Is there any benefit to having them?

Not just for looks, it's usually the first thing to go when you get shot up past your shields and armor. So it's more of a low point damage sponge to me. I use a standard X-wing, so I don't have a lot of room for armor anyway.
