I was cramming some stuff in my Xwing and I noticed I'm going over the energy allowed by my Reactor. It's very clear because the numbers turn red. One time I decide just to try and fly it anyway , and to my surprise everything works. Is this normal? Are you allowed to hold more energy than your reactor can handle? Thanks.

You can, to a point. So long as you don't use everything at once you can have a reactor energy lower than your comsumption total. Basically, you only need enough energy for weapons, shields, and engines. However, if you use more enrgy than your reactor can handle, you'll get a reactor overload and everything on your ship will shut down. I'm not sure how long it lasts but trust me when I say that it's long enough for you to die.

Bring up your ship component layout screen ("V" by default I think) and check your weapons. If you're over energy and you dont run a reactor overload program, your weapons should display a stat, I think its "General efficiency". A general efficiency of .6 means your weapons will only do 60% of their max damage, and maybe refire 60% slower too. This number will decline the more over budget you are until your guns are totally disabled. This isnt to be confused with "Energy efficiency", which comes up when you run weapons overload programs, and affects reactor drain and energy per shot instead of damage.
