Depends which freelancer squad you went.
CorSec can go overt rebel or overt imperial
Smugglers can go overt rebel
RSF can go overt imperial

At least that's why I understood from the information in the various FAQs/Help Files.

My friend is smuggler, and imperial on the ground. She can go overt imperial in space.

As a neutral pilot and a ground Rebel I gotta tell you how much trouble I've had getting to where you want to be, and all the conflicting things people (who all thought they knew what they were talking about) have posted in these forums. See here.

As far as I can tell you from all the trial and error I've done, for a privateer to go overt in space, you have to declare on the ground, hotfoot it to your ship before you get ganked, and goto a rebel space station in space to declare overt in space. Heres the tricky part - not sure yet if you can pvp outside of Kessel and Deepspace with opposing faction space overts. Originally Deepspace and Kessel were supposed to be the only PVP zones. Pilots of any faction who have not reached master cannot go into Deepspace. This only leaves KEssel as a viable pvp zone for non-masters. The problem with this is Neutral pilots who declare at the rebel station can only declare there, they cannot use the rebel station to enter Kessel. Furthermore, when you try to go to the Neutral station entry point for Kessel, the station will not /comm with you because youre a Rebel. So in a nutshell, Neutral pilots get the shaft when it comes to non-master pvp. And ps - Ive tried every combination of events and I still can't get it to work, although there are alot of people out there that aren't in the situation who say it can be done...

Heheh, I'm telling you, all you have to do to go overt as a privateer is be factioned on the ground, then go to a factional space station of the same type you are on the ground and declare. You can then PVP in any sector you want. The only thing you can't do is already be declared before you go to Deep Space--but you can still go out there and PVP, you just can't earn faction from NPCs out there.

I apologize, I just looked back over my post and realized that I didn't fully acknowledge that once you declare in space you can pvp with space-declared opposing faction pilots in any sector, however there are 2 things you cannot do as a privateer: declare for another faction and enter Deepspace as anything other than neutral (as a third faction for deepspace pvp) and enter Kessel overt for either declared faction. My point was that in deepspace, as a master pilot, you are only fighting for the neutrals, if you declare on the ground and declare in space you can fight almost anywhere, but Kessel is strictly pve for neutrals due to the fact that once you declare, the neutral entry station for Kessel will not talk to you.

Ah, the neutral station won't talk to you once you declare, but then the factioned stations that send you to Deep Space/Kessel will. Example: I, a Smuggler's Alliance pilot/ground Imperial, hyper out to Endor, where I fly to either of the standard Imperial space stations there and declare. I then head across the system to the Imperial Claw station, which offers me the choice of going to Deep Space or Kessel. If I try to go to Deep Space, I find I don't have the 30K Imperial Pilot Prestige points I need to enter--but if I try to go to Kessel, which costs nothing, I find myself instantly transported to the Kessel system, a privateer fighting as an overt Imperial, where I can gain FP and kill overt Rebels and everything.

This means the only thing privateers can't do is gain FP from killing things in Deep Space--which, consdering Deep Space is the only place without decay, really isn't fair--but, so long as you're factioned on the ground, you can gain faction in Kessel and PVP in every sector.

i just tried it last night, i flew over to one of the reb stations and i didn't get the go bugger off responce it did talk to me and asked if i wanted to go overt. i did, then all the previously yellow tie variants conned red so i am assuming it worked just fine. the only other question i have is once i am overt most people say the neutral deepspace/kessel station wont talk to you, does this mean i need to gain the appropriate amount of prestige while overt so that the reb station will let me go?

While an overt Reb, the Reb station will let you go to Kessel, but as you can't gain Rebel Prestige Points as a privateer, you'll never be able to go to Deep Space while already declared. Which is indeed a crock.
