Is this possible. I hear people talk about it but cant figure out where to go to make it happen. Thanks to anyone who answers

No. Pilot pretige, no matter if it's Imperial, rebel, or Freelancer, can only be traded in at 30k a time for trips to deep space. There is nothing else it is used for atm.
However many people declare overt before entering deep space as when you destroy enemies in deep space you can earn faction points. So while you are blowing up everything in sight in deep space you're also earning faction points... This is highly recommended as you are vulnerable to players just by being in deep space so not declaring overt makes not sense.
But unless you are rebel or imperial on the ground you cannot earn factional xp. IE a freelancer pilot who declares imperial/rebel to go to deep space (and you have to choose one before entering) will not gain any faction xp because the only faction xp in deep space to be gained is rebel/imperial. Bad for freelancers, good for rebel/imperial.
