Space seems to have gotten all messed up last night. When I launched my viewpoint was locked on the station and my ship was trying to fly circles around the hangar bay. I reset the view and flew away and noticed all my macro commands at the top were those little disappearing man symbols moving back and forth...
Put all my macro's back up there, and hyper'd to Endor. And all the macro's vanished again... But luckily the commands still seem to be there, as I can still activate the commands that should be there with those keys.
Anyway so I jump into deep space, find a group of fighters, launch a bomerstrike 3 on them and jump into combat. And in about 10 seconds I'm scrambling to Hyper out as I've got about 12 ships in pursuit all tearing me up. I manager to get away and let my shields recharge.
Jump'd back, found what the hornets nest I went into before and tried to pick off a B-wing, killed one and I exploded, from the mass of fighters that had taken position behind me...
Seems like deep space just had a huge step up in the danger level. Awings are lethal now, and engaging them is all but suicide as they seem to call for reinforcements which just pummel you from all sides.
Mabye I'm just out of practice but deep space is not fun now. It's annoying and harsh.

I had the same issue with the toolbar icons... As to the rest. I was able to slaughter my fill of fighters with no problem. My guess is you just found an area that had a few battle groups in it. I have noticed that a lot of times while picking off a three assault ship battle group that we fly right by a corvette battlegroup or another assault ship group and those fighters will swarm with the ones I am already fighting. My strategy is to switch targets a few times.. take a few shots at one target then go after a different one then switch again... This breaks up the formation they try to heard you into.

I have noticed that too. The range of the guns on the corvettes have also doubled since the last patch.
I have adopted a new strategy for dealing with the fighters, I get close enough until one of them starts following me, ususally a few more follow. Then I kick my TIE around and hit the boosters to lure them out to an open area of space. Hopefully no more than 6 follow me out there.
I take out the Y-Wing and B-wingsfirst since they have missles, and are slow and easy pickings.I will engage the A-wings if one happensto fly into my sights. I still take a beating, but I have some Reb programs on my droid so I can shift the weight of my shields from front to back or vice versa as needed.
Of course, if I am followed by 10 fighters and/or get too close to some gunboats while fighting, I'm toast.
What I find is worse is going into Deep Space and finding NOTHING there. This has happend to me on5 occations now. The only thingsto be foundwere the ISD and Reb Base, and on one of those occations, even the Reb base was missing! Totally annoying...

I haven't noticed a change in the dificulty of DS, but I too had the toolbar problem, happened while I was flying, just all of a sudden all my icons were gone! I ended up pulling the icon row down so both showed, and all my icons appeared in the top row. I just pushed it back up to one row and was good. Actually the Vettes do seem to be able to bullseye you quite a bit further than before. My old tactic of skip killing the guns and do a short run, gun, turn and burn until the reactor went got me toasted last night

Vettes start hitting from 1000m if they aren't already shooting at something.

I don't know if Deep Space is 'harder' ... but I took out about half a dozen corvettes last night on my own. . .although the space station (rebel) kicked my tail quite quickly.

The dissappearing icons is an annoying bug I have seen several times before. I found that by doing a Ctrl+2 then Ctrl+1 to switch to the second page and then back to the first will restore the icons. But it still goes to the flashing icons everytime I jump. Sometimes logging out and relaunching SWG will clear it up. Seems kinda random. Can't tell if anything is triggering it and it only happens once in a while. Maybe somthing wonky happens on the server.
Haven't really noticed anything out of the ordinary as a Rebel pilot in DS lately. The other night there seemed to be a much bigger presence of both imp and reb npcs in Kessel.
Also, you sure you weren't taken out by another player a few times while fighting the npcs? DS is forced PvP and if someone could have just been messing with you. Were you keeping your eyes peeled for other players?

I spent about an hour last night in DS, grinding faction and praying to run into another player....only saw one other imp out there...oh well. Regardless, There has definately been a change out there. I think the Devs raised the spawn rates since so few people head out there. There were thousands of MOBs out there. About 10-12 Vettes (I took out 4), Novas, really nasty groups of 4 A-wings, loads of B-wings and X-wings. I saw ahuge battle between the ISD and Rebel vette that spawned within range. It was amazing to watch (well the slideshow, P4 3.0G, 1GB RAM, ATi 9800 was getting about 5 fps) The two duked it out for like 3-4 minutes, blaster fire everywhere! I also saw a few imp shuttles with decimator escorts, looked really cool. maybe there was an AI change slipped in, they seemed much more coordinated, in the past the AI would just stick with their wing men and let you shoot them, now they swarm you, and other groups jump in too. I'd be chasing an a-wing and the b-wings would start pounding me anytime they had a shot, great fun!

I've seen deep space vary wildly, from corvettes as common as gnats to almost nothing.
I did get my first space PvP kill, though. Space was empty, and the only other player, in a B-Wing, decided to p0wn me in my wittle TIE Interceptor. (I'm playing around with it, see just how big I can make the guns go, and testing some theories about maneuverability.) I ran away, but kept looking behind me. He was determined to get me. I watched him line up and make ready to fire. When the guy fired, I snap-turned and plinked him to death. No challenge.

I think this is the wave of the future if there isn't a further PvP damge reduction. When I'm going to deepspace just to look for a PvP fight, I take an unshielded T/I. It does have armor on it, just incaseI get jumped by an npc, I have time toreact. It is all about speed and manueverability. I take the T/O when I'm out there for faction points.
