Im still figuring out how to mine with the damn thing, i loaded it up with everything it needs, although my astro chip doesnt seems to work.

The turrets only use the normal lasers and the tractor beam nor the mining laser seem to work??

It is really hard to mine with it. I have been able to get the mining lasers and tractors to work but it is hit or miss with my flight computer.

I'd imagine they're renamed co-pilot seats like in other POB ships. When in the "station", you'll be able to launch specials.
