In short:
Spacebombs - not conducive for PvP (too slow), but Mk2s are very nice for taking out targets like AI-equipped gunships. Mk1s aren't really worth it. Equally effective against armor and shielding.
Image-Rec - best for PvP or Vette PvEing. They lock on faster than any other type and are resistant to countermeasures. Equally effective against armor/shielding, yet you'll be hard pressed to find them in effs over .45x. You can find low-mass Mk2 racks for pretty much any airframe.
Proton - the "all arounder" - a launcher rack for any mass class, and decent damage ranges at the upper range. Effs are about in line with IRs.
Seismic - good against armor, almost worthless against shields.
Concussion - the exact opposite of Seismic - good against shields, but crap against armor.
