Thread: Instanced Space Zones and Space Missions Expanding the Galaxy

Unlike the current 10 space zones that are "static zones", a series of "instanced space zones" would be added to help expand the galaxy to better fit a larger more fun area of space pilots can fly too. The instanced zones would be done to combine special space missions and extra mini games open to players. Listed below are examples of how the instanced zones can be implemented.


POB Ship Factional Missions

By conversing with an Imperial or Rebel station, you would have the option to engage in one of 3 types of factional instanced missions. Accepting the mission would make your vessel jump to the instanced sector. Because the sector is instanced, you will be the only player vessel in the sector at any given time and the sector itself would be one of many chosen fro man available list. For instance, the mission might take you to a sector in space orbiting Ryloth or even Coruscant. However, the space zone itself would be reduced to an exceptionaly small zone of space localised around whatever the mission target is. There would be no static or random spawns in an instanced zone except for spawns relating to your mission.


Assualt Mission

The Empire/Rebellion has ordered you to attack an object in a specified sector. The object would be a random selection and would span from command ships like Corellian Corvettes and Star Destroyers to space stations.


Defence Mission

A certain object in a specified system is under attack from the opposing forces. You are ordered to jump to the sector immediately and defend the target. Much like the assualt mission, the object with be a random selection of ships and/or stations.


Rescue Mission

A certain object has been criticaly disabled and requires rescueing. Unlike the previous two missions, this type of mission is not likely to involve combat. However, it would involve other tasks such as a new "energy divert" mini game where a member aboard your ship has to successfuly divert energy to certain systems of the crippled ship in a certain order before it blows up.



POB Ship non-Factional Missions

As well as the factional missions, there would be non-GCW related missions for players to indulge in, allowing those not interested in taking part in the war to still have fun in other systems outside of the 10 static zones. These missions would be available via special terminals located throughout the ground game and space stations. The various mission types would include:


Galactic Survey Commision

The Galactic Survey Commission requests a ship monitor a certain scientific event in a specified system. It would draw from a series of random scientific missions which include: scanning a gas giants, mining/scanningasteroids, scanning comits, entering nebula


Upon accepting the mission (if from ground you'd be given an option to accept it while in space) you'll be transported to the instanced zone where you'll find your mission target. There will be no random or static spawns except those that relate to your mission.


Smugglers Run

A certain crime lord would contract you to smuggle an item to a specified sector. Upon accepting the mission, you'll be transported to the instanced space zone where you'll encounter a series of events that will end in you having to dock with your mission target to transfer the cargo. It is very likely you'll be attacked several times by pirates or authorites before you are able to dock and the mission target itself may be any series of ships or even space stations. A mission may even entail you have to travel to multiple systems transfering multiple cargo's before the mission completes. Certain missions may also include any of the 10 current static zones.


Distress Call

You recieve an emergency distress call from a ship or station in a specified system and upon accepting the mission travel there to help save the crew. This type of mission has various different types of mission styles from picking up escape pods, fending off attacking pirates or even entering in a mini game to transfer energy from your POB ship to the mission ship in an attempt to repair it.


Piracy

A pirate gang will commision you to enter a specified system and loot the cargo of a certain vessel or station. This effectively is like the faction assualt mission though will always be against civilian targets and not military.



Conclusion

By adding this system it is effectively adding many possible hundreds of sectors to the game without having to physicaly add content or even heavily increased server space. It adds a new dinamic to the Galactic Civil War for players to engage in while also adding a more civilian aspect to space. Since only POB ships would be allowed to engage in any of these missions, it gives a big reason for people to take part in POB flying as well as adding more content to an otherwise boring space game without cluttering up the already too-full 10 space zones. The instanced nature of this system also prevents missions from being camped.

This was suggested and has been discussed in this thread which seems to have, at least partially, given birth to the ideas of boarding parties in the upcoming Capital Ship expansion.
