Thread: How to balance all the ships in the game without driectly 'nerfing' any?
It still is a terrible idea. Everyone will end up with virtually identicle ships.
Everyone and their brother will cram a RE'd Level 10 Engine with very similar statistics into their A-Wing, along with near identicle RE'd items matching those other cert levels.
Why don't you just say, "We should get rid of all these options for our Starships and just use the base models, like in X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter!"
That's basically what we would end up with, with VERY limited variation based upon color choices.
Having to work your mass and energy into the equation is a hekcuva lot more interesting, stimulating and fun then just being able to munchkinize every single one of our starfighters.

Your comments about the heavy Z-85 also help highlight the RotW fighter problem even more. Why the heck are most of the pilots in your guild flying a republic era starfighter? You also assume wrong in that I'd cap everything at tier 4 for tier one ships. Skillbox determines nothing but your options. At tier 1, you'd be able to fly light fighters (which have their own advantages and disadvantages), tier 2 you'd learn to fly standard bombers, tier 3 superiority fighters, etc. Your assuming I'm going into this with the standard MMO mantra of higher level = better, which is not the case. I'm assuming higher level = more options. If I were to do another arbitrary stat write-up for the Z-95, I'd give it slightly less speed than the A-Wing and more armor/firepower.
No, it doesn't highlight a problem with a starfighter series that had been around for an extremely long period of time. The Z-95, if you follow any of the "history" of that ship, started out a very longtime in the past as an Airspeeder fighter, well before Palpatine was born. Over the years, the design changed, it became a starfighter and was altered and upgraded through the years into the Z-95 form we see in the game right now.
This last Z-95 design was the precursor to the X-Wing and the only major differences between then is that the Z-95 is more of an Heavy Interceptor and the X-wing is a Space Superiority starfighter. Sometimes flying a Heavy Interceptor is more important then flying a Space Superiority starfighter.
