Thread: Sorry if this has been flogged to death but...question concerning e pulse

I totally agree that privateers have a bad penatly with their ship sizes in PvP but an instant-kill button for all ships engaged is not the solution. The less with overpowered tiny, highly maneuverable, high mass ships from ROTW. As Tomo said before: ROTW did indeed turn out some weaknesses of the old system. (You know my opinion on the imbalances in ROTW itself).

Yep, if your close enough it IS an I-Win button, I was lagged out last night by the fire from the ISD and a JSF came in for a quick and easy kill (so he thought).. Guess what? I WON

Having said that it is a Dirty Dirty trick to use and I try not to generally, I feel better about taking down a ship by actually fighting rather than pushing a button.

So far I have not heard about any e-pulse grieffing on my server, however, space life on my server is very limitted. Now, I will take your word for it if you say it is being used on griefing a lot. I would just reduce it's power against other players only, and leave it as it is for PvE.

By the way... when I mentioned pirate traps I was completely talking about PvE. Pirate trap and bomber strike should never work on PvP... although... If any privateer could call a pirate trap on you... the only thing you would get out of it is a big laugh

The debuff Idea could also be implemented as long as the debuff is only temporary. If you get permantly debuffed when you use e-pulse and you have to re-run all your programs again, then you just made another special completely useless. It takes between 4-5 minutes to run 4 droid programs. No special is worth that

Not that there is a difference between unbalanced and griefing. I think we're saying its unbalanced and needs to change more than that it's a widelyabused and abusive tactic that ruins gameplay.

Like I said before, I think any changes to epulse should come as part of a wholesale revamp of all Specials for all piloting groups, so fixing ptrap is part of the deal.

I also feel that a debug pass on droid commands is in order too, and if that comes to pass, then the timers get fixed on overloads, and making epulse an permanent debuff of overloaded systems seems even more balanced and appealing to me. Realize that all your L3 overload programs should be running as quickly as Cap Overcharge, and they aren't due to bugs, before you propose that an epulse debuff would be unfair.

They already nerfed E-pulse once. You all want to nerf it again?!? Should the Privateers get out and throw rocks? Would that make you all happier?

E-pulse does drain the Cap and sheilds bare. This means ZERO and they have to recharge. It is only effective at very close range, and is best against sheilds and least effective against armor...this doesn't mean if you aresitting on them you wont take much damage if you have a lot of armor...it means.."what the heck are you doing sittingthat close anyways."

There are 2 ways to survive the blast. One is stop puttingzero armor, or lvl1 armor in your ships and equip them correctly. Its much harder to get through 1K of armor with an epulse. Two is stay 100m+ away. Its not hard to do. Your guns can hit from over 500m away. You don't need to be right on top of the opponet to hit them. Most dogfighting is taking place at 200m+.

This is why it is least effective against PVE. It would appear that the AI are able to equip their ships correctly and stay at a good range more often. (Seems that the AI figured out we are not in WW1, but are in fact in the space age)

Now that you have beefed up your armor, and are staying at a good dogfighting range, let's see what happens when the privateer sets it off. The privateer sets it off and you actually survive. True you are banged up a bit, but now a number of things have happened to the privateer's ship...

1)sheilds are gone

2)cap is gone

3)droid commands reset

This means that it takes less to destroy them, they can't shoot back, and nothing is recharging in that time because they are likely running their reactor in the red and will need to get RO3 running...which means that much more time before EO3 goes in...thus less manuverable.

Instead of complaining about the skills others have, learn to overcome them. The American pilots were at a large disadvantage in early WW2 by Japanese flying the Zero that could dance across the sky with ease compared to the heavier American fighters. American pilots couldn't really call for a nerf....so they did what was needed to overcome what they thought to be a superior fighter. Soon, American pilots were using hit and run tactics that used thier fighters heavier weight, better armor and more firepower to take advantage of a weakness in the zero. It could not dive as fast, and was weakly armored. Suddnely, the skies were more balanced. No nerfing....just a bunch of pilots that learned to overcome a superior foe.

Such tales exist in many aspects of history. The E-pulse does have weaknesses, it can be overcome. Flying in and parking on the privateers tale is not a wise move. In fact engaging at clse speed, even in a fly by is not a good move in the start of battle. Keep your distance, and get them tangled in a dance. This results in the cap and sheilds getting used and makes the EP3 useless.

Remember, we have 3 different factions in space, and many different pilots. What is good for one is not for the other. Parking on the 6 of an Xwing or a TIE/ln may be a great thing and look all spectacular on the screen, but you wouldn't do the same to an Imperial gunboat. You know to adapt there, why not elsewhere?

One of the things about fighting in space is you actually have to be moving in the direction of your target to shoot at him. If you're moving in the direction of your target, how do you stop him from getting within epulse range if he wants?

Epulse does not reset droid programs last I checked. Shields down? Oh... let me wait 3 seconds and cap to shield again.

Armor won't help you either - if I can blow away pvp ships witha 12K mass novice ships and 500 strenght shields then I sincerly doubt you can avoid a privateer ace coming at you with a heavy scyk, reward shields and a 2K cap, and an engine with 70+ PYR and 100+ topspeed.

You're assuming that's the case because it makes logical sense, but the numbers don't seem to be bearing you out. Epulse is raw damage, no variable mods for armor or shields and from the numbers posted here, it doesn't even seem like the PvP damage reduction is being applied correctly.

The AI hasn't figured out anything. The reason it's not so effective vs NPCs is because NPC stats are beefed beyond anything a player can have to compensate for the fact that they are fundamentally brainless. It's the reasonNPCs have 4x the HAM of a player on the ground, and it's the reason NPC ships have double or triple the shielding we do. That's known facts, not surmise about being properly equipped.

I don't know how to quote officially but thats copy and pasted from Ajag's post.

If you care to read my initial post I didn't mention anything about getting it nerfed mate...in fact I said ALL IS FAIR IN LOVE AND WAR so in fact quite the opposite.

Thanks for all the input etc.

I think luck is going to have to come into this quite a lot then along with a few ideas you guys have suggested and a few things I might try myself.

I've been flying a considerable time now and know the majority of Ace/master Pilots on my server and never really encountered E-pulse much before so I'm not too concerned about it...its not like the 3 IR missile thing..which too I have no problem with because it 'can' be countered, but it doesn't discount the possibility..well certainty of me having to face it again.

So as I tend to say....I'll live , learn and adapt.

hehehe, to quote someone just click reply by their post and then when the edit window comes up just look in the Icons for the one that looks like a chat bubble

Sorry man, I was not implying you. If you see later in your post, that talks about nerfing/penalties/etc already started. I know you did not ask for a nerf, BUT all you have to do in this forums is even just throw a hint of something being overpowered/misused for people to jump right away into the nerf wagon.

As I said, I am a privateer but has never being on the giving nor receiving end of e-pulse, however as it was said before I think if we are even going to bring up a special/droid command into talks, we have to talk about all of them at the same time. adjusting/nerfing one is not going to do anything but affect a specific group of people.

Once again that was not directed to you

Well, lets see. There is a 100msphere around them to avoid. You have a 500msphere area around them that you can be engaged. That is a heck of a lot of real estate.

Last I checked, fighter pilots have always been able to move in one direction while engaged in combat. Hasn't been a problem for those in the past. Many of the same techniques they use still work in our game. This is a dog fight we are talking about here. Use the 3D to your advantage. Break off if you are getting to close.

Here is one site that has some basic tips of dogfighting that tends to be the closest to our situation. JTL is the clsoest to the time when jet fighters first began seeing use, and before the age of missiles. Thus we look to the 50s to see how its down.

Pay close attention to LATERAL SEPARATION. That part addresses keeping room between yourself and you opponet when you have the offense. If you are 100mfrom your target, you are giving them the edge..even if they don't have E-pulse.

http://www.frugalsworld.com/migalley/dogfighting.shtml

Reading that, and understnding it will go a long way in keeping you alive...even when the opponet has a skill like E-pulse.

Using any special resets your droid commands. At least they have for me since JTL came out. Maybe you don't notice it, but test it and you will see. As for your comment about cap to sheild. Learn to read. EP3 takes your CAP and sheild energy. CAP to sheild is not usefullin that case.

As for the second paragragh. Some ships are not easy to avoid. That is the way of war. But an equally suited ship will handle it, and other pilots will learn to adapt as well. Avoid a hvy with sheild and a good engine? If my ship is heavier and has the firepower, I am going to be coming in on you fast and leaving just as fast to get to 500m+ so you can't respond. If the first pass didn't do the job, then I'll be dead or leaving town to return when you least expect it. But then again, that would be leaving out one detail. Never fly without a wingman. Your nimble ship won't save you when you are solo and 2 pilots that work together move in on you at 250m. Sureyou can chase one with your fast engine.....but that leaves you a sitting duck to the other. Just as 2 pilots in TIEs can eat up others by working together.

Epulse is not an "I win" button when used agaist those that engage in a form of combat other than park on your 6 at 100m and shoot.

I'm not assuming. Reality is, a big gun in PVP can tear you up just as fast. If PVP reductions need to be addressed, then address PVP reduction, not nerf EPulse. Nerfing Epulse..then balancing PVP will result in it being less than useless. Learn what needs to be addressed and address it. Find the cause. In this case, everyone is mad about getting killed fast. Well, that happens in PVP...by laser, missile....Epulse...its not that it is over powered...way above the others...that PVP reduction needs adjustement. Just as missiles and laser can be avoided...so can Epulse.

Learn what sarcasm is. Clearly the AI isn't gearing up and equipping their ships. Its pointing out that the devs..gave the AI..armor and sheilds. While many in PVP scrimp on the armor for other things...then whine when they get hit and the armor fails them. There is a benefit/hinderence from scrimping on armor. More mass for other stuff, but you are driving a big tank of gas.

Dunno what game you're playing then. The only Specials that reset power systems (and thus droid commands) are the Emergency ones. eshield, ethrust, eweapons, and I think pumpreactor. You honestly think we wouldn't notice if energy pulse or IFFscramble reset our ship? yeesh.

Now, where to start...

First, I have been regularily pvping in space for months now, and usually in large scale battles, so I know about wingmen, tactics, dogfighting and stuff. I rarely fly alone either, thanks for trying to lecture me. (And for the record, nimble ships in the hand of better pilots than I am can kill 2 or more ace pilots at once. Even I managed once to down to X-Wings in my TIE Interceptor(in a planned "let's meet here. Everyone ready? Ok, let's do it" battle, not some surprise meeting in deep space).

Second, "learn to read"? I said "Wait 3 seconds" then cap to shield - in 3 seconds my cap has regenerated quite a bit. Not that the likelyhood to take a hit in the few seconds without a shield is much of a danger, especially in a JSF - I saw those ships dodge fire from half a dozen aces before getting blown up.

I used Epulse in Kashyyyk missions, and during testing in deep space, and I did not notice any resetting of my droid programs. I could have missed it, but I doubt it. However - what I did not miss was the range of over 200 meters of it - not 100 meters - and the power it had at that range with some pitiful shields and cap to power it. So... I tested it, I got the numbers, what did you do with epulse? I also saw it used in battle in a large scale engagement, and it was a killer, taking out 4 ships without any chance.

And good luck trying to get away from a 95K mass heavy scyk with a 120 topspeed engine in a heavy fighter.

I always found Epulse to rest my droid commands. Maybe this has changed. I haven't been a privateer in a little while. There was a time that it functioned as the emergency ones tho..and fitting no less as Epulse is really more of an emergency feature than Bomber strike or IFF scramble. Perhaps the code was changed. Wouldn't be the first time that happened. Regardless, it did reset commands at one time. If it doesn't now, it doesn't change much in my post as the resetting on the droid commands was merely 1 of 3 things that drastically affected the opponets ship when used. Keep your distance and take them out from 200-300m and you won't have a problem. If you can't keep your distance to 200-300m, learn.
