The crosshair indicates the right spot to aim based on the assumption that the target will keep it's current velocity vector. If the target flies curve it is wrong, since the velocity vector of the target constantly changes. You will have to aim closer to the target than the indicator tells you.

i did not 1-star you. I only 1-star people who deliberately try to piss me or other people off.
that aside, thank you guys for all the tips. I have the droid interface. i got the shield commands(got the **** kicked outta me for playing with the shields when I shouldn't have 
), and I will try the stopping for a dead-on shot. I have tried the mission once since getting the DI and failed because of playing with my shields, but I think I'll be alright when I try it again.
