Thread: I'd like a couple of professional opinions on my heavy X-wing

Alex, you just gave the answer to the issue you brought up yourself.

"I've yet to see a crafted weapon that was anywhere near as good as .8, .8 on shield and armor ratio. And when you are firing with 2 level 10 weapons over 4500 max damage and 1 level 8 with 3800, I seriously doubt any ship is going to survive the first volley to make refire rate matter all that much."

Absolutely if you CAN get level 10s on there, with a tier 10 engine, do it.

"Now for pvp, the heavy x might not be the best option because of the superior maneuverability of the jsf or the grievous fighter, but that is a function of the maneuverability of the ship and engine and not the weapon loadout. In my experience in pvp the first one to land a hit almost invariabily wins."

Exactly. That's why you should give up the extra 15-20k mass for the tier 10 engine, so you can be running a 82-83+ PYR engine rather than a ~74PYR Nym's. While an extremely well RE'd Nym's engine on a JSF will still give you problems, the vast majority of JSFs with their bleh RE Nyms (or no RE) are not going to be able to out turn you. What good is a level 10 weapon if it never is brought to bear? And, frankly, as Leaph points out, no JSF can withstand a volley from 2 (not to mention his 3) RE'd Tri-Cannons. I got a glancing blow with one of my level 7 speed blasters on a JSF last night and it punched his shields and most of his armor, a turn or two later, after he shunted, I landed a solid volley with at least 2 of my blasters, including my Tri and his JSF made a cute little popping sound and turned into a cloud of vapor.

In PVE, Washell's set up is freaking insane. No NPC ship can out turn an X in a low 70s PYR engine, and that kind of heavy firepower will reduce NPC ships to debris fields very quickly, however, in PVP, I think you HAVE to sacrifice some of the firepower to make your ship competitive in a turning match and 20k mass is not much to ask for that. And as we've all seen, that kind of firepower is rather redundant in PVP.

Yeah, good point. As a pure PVE rig (I missed that comment) I probably wouldn't change a thing but add some more armor in, as psiko said earlier, if you can shave mass a bit.

lol yeh. For pve that rig is sweet mate.

Thing with me is I answer threads from a pvp point of view. I guess I should broaden my horizons ...and possibly read the text more clearly. Yeh..for pve that engine is awesome and those guns are well..simply put, I'd hate to be a NPC TIE Fighter .

Ok, no big surprises in the responses. Guess I've done my homework well by reading here the last few months.

Comments to each part:

Reactor: No comments as I expected, could be couple of points improved but that wouldn't matter much.

Engine: Psiko, kinda disappointed you didn't recognize a post-nerf Haor Chall or for that no-one corrected you
The QID was in my A-Wing, but I RE'd a post-nerf L6 to 70+ YPR stats for that. The QID is now back in my X. 102 top, 75+ YPR, 22k mass.

Shield: No-brainer

Armor: 600+ armor at 2k mass and people say I should go heavier... Best hitpoint/mass ratio in the game. <sigh>. I could actually drop it altogether if it wasn't for deep space. I push my ship over the edge in deep space to learn exactly where the edge is. No decay is nice when you've got months of RE on board. In the other sectors nothing gets past my shields.

Cap: Level 4 will work too, but I can spare the mass for this one.

Booster: Got a whole pile of L4's and a couple of rewards lying around. Am able to RE a better one but haven't gotten to it yet. Only use it to get from A to B and away from a GB/Corvette that decides to rotate so it isn't a big issue for me.

Weapons: L8 reward RE, can't go wrong. TheL10's are nice, could be a lot better.

PvP: The only person I encountered on Eclipse so far I couldn't kill with this is KaylBreinhar in a JSF which took even more time to RE. Everyone else either has crafted engine or less flying skill and ends as spacedust. An L10 engine won't let me get Kayl and isn't needed for the others, so why bother with the mass. L10 engine + triple RE'd tricom's was the previous incarnation so I know how it handles.

I will never use SW crafted guns, vs ratings coupled to max dmg values are just so much lower, even taking refire into account. After 15 years of Wing Commander I've learned to aim so I don't need to create a minefield of laser bolts to get my kills.

PvP on eclipse is, sadly, rare. This ship allows me to entertain myself on the NPC's in kessel/deep space while waiting for other people to show. If I know I'm heading out for PvP (invite or event) I bring my A-wing.

Next incarnation:

Most parts will stay. I will RE 3 more level 10 guns at a minimum of 4700 max and vs 800 ratings (might even loot THE helmet on these loot runs ). To make room for the 3rd L10 I'll drop the shield to L7 (protectonet or crafted). I know that has all the protection I need if I'm a bit more carefull around gunboats. The booster will be replaced by a better RE'd L4 reward booster. The final aim is to be able to one shot tier 4's. Currently I'm dropping them to 50/50/92/100, occasionally knocking of the engine on the first shot (without subtarget)

Thanks for the replies so far, was an interesting read.

Sounds like it matches your intent perfectly then. A bit different than I play it, but very nice. I'd love to run that thing around Deep Space for some PVE, but I enjoy my load out as well, and have a lot more work on it.
