Communication is probably the key to victory in these things. Your pilots need to know what to do and when to do it. That doesn't mean you need to be bossing them around at all times, but clear orders and objectives are essential to keeping any kind of organization.

Stuff changes in a hurry up there, too, so having an effective comm network is way important for keeping people updated. TeamSpeak rocks, but chat channels work fine, too--especially if you set up redundancies in your network, like by working through a single chat channel and then groupchat as well, and by having squadron leaders taking and dispersing orders from an overall commander. Any method that channels information back and forth quickly and clearly should work, though.

As far as tactics go, I try to remember that it's very likely that at any given time at least someone is going to be shooting me or lining up a missile for my tailpipe, so flying straight for any longer than a second tops is a bad idea. This makes shooting people difficult at times, but you have to find a balance between keeping evasive and keeping the firepower on.

Yeah I know. I was there. But that was more like an arranged encounter. And that wasn't a big 'event'. It was fun though.

After my first large scale PvP event, my best suggestion is always pack the missiles, even if its something token. The worst part of the whole ordeal was people crowding lines of sight in the tight furball and guns getting more friendly hit tones than hits or even clean misses.

Tomo. I am reliably informed that you are one of those pilots who fall under the "ARGH! GANK THAT PILOT NOW!!?!?" category

Yeah.. for the first few months of the year, when Starsider's PVP scene was starting to take off, I was able to fly under the radar a bit, which freed me up to do more killing. These days, though, I attract Rebel missiles like some sort of missile-attracting magnet. Last time I showed up for the last leg of a battle I hear their TS lit up with calls for my head.

That's way flattering, but it's made me change up my strategy for group combat--now instead of moving from one target to the next without having to worry too bad about what might be chasing me around, I've got to fly mostly defensively, and do my best to keep whichever Rebs are on me tied up till my squadmates can get to them. I still need to work on this, though, because I swear if I level out for longer than an instant, those damn Rebs just fill up my screen with missile locks.

Really, the way tactics on both a group and individual level evolve over time might be my favorite part of large-scale PVP. Having to switch things up constantly just to keep up with the other side adds a level of excitement to every engagement. Great opponents really push you to get better, too. The dynamics of an ongoing PVP scene are unbeatable.

Leaph touched on it a little bit but I thinkattitude toward the enemy is a big factor too. Just because you are shooting at someone doesn't mean that they are a bad person. Unfortunatly I have seen a bad attitude like this take some really good pilots out of the game. Not sure about the rebel side but the Imp side has had its moments ofacting likethe players on the rebel sideare the enemy in an actual war. This attitude kills the fun for everyone... the rebels because they get accused of stuff they aren't doing and the Imps because they get tired of all the whining. I think the best way to handle this attitude is to stop it as soon as it starts. If someone makes a comment about the other side shooting engines, don't let the masses get spurred up by it because it will get out of control and people will not want to fly in the large battles.

Actually there is nothing wrong with acting if the enemy really is your mortal enemy and a scourge on the universe that must be eradicated. This however is entirely different to whining, moaning and sore losers. One is roleplaying, the other is being an arse!

As you say on tactics, never ever get target fixated, always keep an eye out on what is going on around. If your really clever, mean and outnumbered, you can swing your manouvers so that you will nearly always have an enemy under your guns! If someone chases you and is just out of range, set yourself on a head to head with your mate and voila you have a rear firing set of guns, etc. If you ever fly straight and level, do it to attract enemy fire. And the best tactic is to recon the enemy first and assign a target to each of your wingmates so you dont end up all over the same guy with his mates all after you. When it becomes a furball keep moving and just go for targets of opportunity.

As you know mate, these tactics work if we all stick to our designated targets. It's usually good to put the stronger pilots up against the stonger opposition, or who you think will cause the most trouble. It's possible to tell from the first engagement who the better pilots are, so either set 2 on them, or as I said, the stronger team member in your squad (Which makes obvious sense). From experience voice progs are a big, big help. They help in calling targets, and making tactics. In the time it can take to type something with the lag you can get in chat, can mean the difference between life and death with the speed that some pvp can be decided now.

I just made a toon on Starsider, I love space combat and Scylla was just devoid of it. Listening to you all makes me so giddy to get my Duney up to par fast so I can join the 121st against the rebel scum! I have yet to be in a large scale PvP battle in space mostly because the interest on Scylla seems to be the jedi grind and space is a ghost town. I have no tips to offer, but just wanted to say to all of you that I am looking forward to flying with you all

Oh yes..more Imperial targets. Please, as lowly Rebel scum I want to be outnumbered
Plus, yeh Tomo I could't agree more. Flying vs more targets with more wingmen certainly does imrpove skills a -lot-. I'm going to try not getting over excited tommorow though That last event we had, I was way too hyped up on the old sugar and caffeine and even dropped my mouse at one point*hides the Cola*
