You sir need to fly the Vaksai. It is the decent, balanced fighter you've been looking for. I am a die hard Imp but decided to go freelance with my alt so I could get a feel of freelance ships. Then I got my hands on a Vaksai. Loaded her up and took her for a test drive. Before getting the Vaksai I was on this toon 99% of the time. Since I've jumped into the cockpit of my Vak I think i've been on my alt about a good 80% of the time. If you load the Vaksai out and if you can get used to her size, it almost feels like you're cheating. As a matter of fact I've had a few people ask me if the Vaksai was bugged or if I was using some kind of exploit.
