The "peashooter" approach on A-Wings/Advs/Ints/DLs will take flippin forever. Not to mention pilots like me, who've managed to mount reward shields on 65k airframes, would have a drastically unfair advantage.

well... my experience with PvP in space is that you don't need to use lower level weapons or anything like that. What you need is skill! I have had the most awesome fights in space, taking well up to 10 minutes, dodging and slowly loosing components untill finally the engine or reactor goes boom. Yes, a clean shot from 3x4K damage guns will blow up any player ship, but if you know your opponent is there you can actually dodge and a strafe shot won't blow you up.
The idea you stated is, in my opinion, good for practice, but after a couple of times, why not take the step and fit the best equipment you have into your ships and do some major pwnage in space?

Whilist daydreaming about the perfect PvP squadron to dominate space with, i revisited the basics.
No pilot should be by themselives. Ideally everyone should have a wingman. If i had my way, id ahve ppl fly in groups of 3.
Id organize it as follows:
Element -a Group: 2 to 3 pilots,
Flight: - chat channel of 2 to 3 elements
Squadron - Two or more flights.
Assign wingmen and groupings before you even leave the ground.

Hehe I read this kind of organisation in a Star Wars sourcebook
On Starsider we have more the following:
Squadrons: A group of fighter pilots that flies together regularly. This serves both training purpose as they can learn from each other but also helps their coordination as in what to do when. They know how to work together and assist each other.
For these reasons i tend to call it a static structure.
Flightgroups: A group of fighter pilots that flies together in a single battle. All of these pilots share the flightgroup objective for the battle. Therefore they often have similar ships (especially speed is important so others needn't wait all the time) but do not necessarily belong to the same squadron. Depending on the total number of people and the type of the space battle the size of a flightgroup varies. It can contain multiple squadrons to only few pilots from a squadron while the rest is in another flightgroup. Classical objectives for flightgroups are scouting, fighterscreen, picking and disabling strong opponents, defending your ships, etc.
Thus I call Flightgroups dynamic.
This type of organisation allows first time pilots and other pilots without a squadron or wingman to take part in the event too with a definate objective. At the same time it supports experienced squadrons which helps coordinating inside and between the flightgroups enormously.

I'm ex Air Force. Air force basic orgaization is element, flight, squadron, group, wing, then numbered Air force or command ( i forget which came first), . They problably borrowed some of it from there.
