i am not sure if it makes a difference but last week i took out my y-8 solo and no luck unless i came in from a distance and kept shooting and flew by like a fighter would, but thats not a workable mining methode.Ibrought a fellow master pilot up with me to pilot while i ran the tb and to be surprised we were blowing chunks off the asteroid at a complete standstill. my co-pilot needed to get going so i dropped him off and flew back to the same asteroid and guess what, no chunks.

so try bringing a crew with you with atleast one other master pilot with you. might work, might not but worth a try i say

had 4 poeple in mine no chunks. personaly I dont think the Y-8 shouold make chunks I think the front laser should be specail laser tractor call it a drilling laser park in front of hte astroid and go at it till its empty or you are full... kilda like a harvistor in space and use the turrets for defence like any other POB

Yeah, I'm thinking it's a POB ship issue...I haven't tried it with my VT-49 but I am already having to go through therapy as it is for turning my precious TIE Oppressor into a miner....

I've also tried it with multiple crewmembers on board, and nothing was happened. I'm going to try it with a player made cargo hold, and see if that makes any difference. Once I try that I'll have tried everything I can think of.

And I COMPLETELY agree that the Y-8 shouldn't be using a laser to mine with; that's just silly. That front gun point/probe SHOULD be some type of drill. Then the Y-8 can pull up to the asteroid and drill resources directly into the cargo hold. You could even be clever and have malfunctions such as the drill bit breaking or getting the drill stuck or jammed. Shooting it with a laser would be insanely dumb, even in real life. A drill or laser drill would be used to extract minerals, not blowing off chunks and chasing after it in what ammounts to an expensive game of "Asteroids".

What kills me though is that some folks ARE mining with the Y-8. So either it's an intermittant bug, or some peoples deeds/chassis are bugged. If that is the case, the devs need to come up with a NPC drop-off/pick-up so you can turn in your busted Y-8 for one that will work. Not saying that this will fix the problems, but they're gonna have to come up with something. Because my patience is running out trying to mine with my starfighter.

And BTW, anyone notice that space resources don't have a place on the Bazaar terminals? Or am I not looking in the right place?

i did some mining with pob-ships (y-8 and yt, to be more specific). sometimes solo and sometimes with other players on board. the result:
the pilotseat has to be manned to be able to break chunks out of an asteroid. found that out on a desperate mining attempt with a yt. as long as i was flying the ship (pilot seat manned) another player was able to shoot chunks out of the asteroid. the second i left the pilotseat, no more chunks came out of the asteroid. the speed/position of the ship seems to be of no importance, just the pilot station has to be manned (pretty boring in a yt without a fireable weapon).
testing after that knowledge breakthrough (ironic? ^^) with the y-8 showed, that i could shoot chunks out of an asteroid with the elite mining laser as long as it was mounted in weapon slot 2 (pilot control) solo. and that other players manning a turret could also shoot chunks out of an asteroid with both, the elite and the mk3 laser as long as i enjoyed crawling around in the pilotseat.

You can't even get a Y-8 without ROTW. It is quest only and the NPC is on Kashyyyk.

I knew it would be unlikely that this is the case, but my alt did the mission and traded me all his stuff (I don't have rotw yet, waiting for teh BARC speeder) and then I tried to mine and it wasn't happening, neither in my fighter nor my y-8

When I first got my Y-8 I loaded it up with the loot from the Y8 quest. Bugged to all he11.

I put the mk 2 mining laser in the forward gun, and the tractor beam in the upper turret. didn't work, couldn't get chunks, etc...

Here's what works for me now. I replaced the looted mining lasers with player crafted one's. I have a MK3 mining laser in the forward gun, and I put the mk2 in the upper turret. DO NOT use tractor beams on these ships, currently they just don't work.

Admittedly, any fighter outfitted with crafted mining equiptment can mine faster than a Y-8. The main benefit I see with the Y8 is the ability to have 2 mining lasers going at one time and the huge cargo hold. Otherwise, and fighter would do just as well if not better.

<<<<I'd be happy if I could just GET it to mine...it doesn't break off pieces, none what so ever...If I examine the asteroid before I start shooting it and record the condition, it doesn't change AT ALL when I use the mining laser on it. Somehow, I think that the ships are bugged, (like many other quest based items in this game) that it works for some, doesn't work for others

I have the same problem. Nothing I do seems to fix it. I have redeeded and reloaded everything in the correct order, but still can not damage the asteroid. Everything works fine when I load it all into my fighter, but after several days and as many attempts, I can do nothing with my Y-8

You Need Someone in the Pilot Seat in order for you to mine...

Hmm if true that would explain why i coudlnt mine in my Nova.

That really sucks. In a low threat area you could sit there and mine a fair amount by yourself. I guess not, apparently we're required to group in space now too =/

The Y-8 is bugged in strange ways, still.. You still can't decorate the interior properly either, since you can't move objects up at all. Heh. :-/

But yeah, I agree with what was said earlier about the "drill". Although it would be fine a variant of the mining laser, but one that continuously pulls straight to your hold, bypassing the medium and small chunk phases. Then the turrets could be just used for defense.

OK...after further review...

It is fact, you must have a pilot in the pilot seat to mine with the Y-8. The forward firing gun will not mine, however if I had a crewmember man the top gun with the elite mining laser it did break off chunks and we were able to get some into the hold.

NOW...about the whole "Chasing-after-asteroid-pieces-with-a-POB-ship" thing...this is shear lunacy. It is neither practical or efficient to mine with a Y-8, with the current methodology of space mining. As several threads have pointed out before.

We need a drill. Tractor beams are pointless, and just as inefficient if you didn't have one installed. A drill would allow you to "dock" with the asteroid, and make you have to stay even if you get attacked or risk damaging the drill. The Left Operations Chair could become a "Drill Operators Chair" allowing that individual access to the hold; what's in it, the quality of the resources, and how full the hold is getting. You would still require a pilot, operations officer and 2 gunners for defense. We can start calling it theY-8 "Bloated Tick".

Hopefully this information gets to someone who can make or suggest changes to the devs (i.e. our pilot correspondant) so some SERIOUS space mining can occur.
