Thread: Will you grind my pilot?

Do ya'll really get lots of people asking that? I mean, what's the point of taking up pilot if you aren't actually going to, ya know... fly your own ship?

With inspiration buffs helping, the Tier 4 boxes are a long grind, but it's still fun. I'm half way through Tier 4 Black Epsilon now, and just loving going up into Endor space, and flying "patrol" between the Endor station, Imp Station 1, the static spawn of Black Sun, and the Red Sin Chimera region. Lots of fun stuff to kill, can easily get a ton of credits, XP, parts for RE or sale very quickly up there, and I'm a fairly casual player. I just can't understand why someone *wouldn't* want to do that themselves... *shakes head*.

And I still haven't gotten any REALLY cool loot (like the Black Sun helmet or smuggler parts) but that's yet another draw to be up there grinding away. So we have Rangers and rangers, Jedi and jedi... I guess there are Pilots and pilots too.

Ok I keep hearing people in Tier 4 wanting help grinding XP because the Tier 4 boxes are "so long".

I REALLY have to differ here. I'm a Tier 4 Smuggler's Alliance freelancer. Last night I got two ALL of the experience required for my Tier 4 Ship Components box just by doing 3 duty missions (that I didn't even RUN full length). Am I getting some secret special XP Boost that no one else is getting, or something? I really don't see how Tier4 is so hard.. (and thus contributing to my lack of patience when someone wants me to grind them).

I don't really run into this at all. I'm asked to help with Missions, by friends but, mainly, when it comes to out and out "grinding" I'm seeing just the lingering belief that Pilot is like Ground; it's faster and more enjoyable to gather xp in a group. I don't think it is. There aren't many spawns that can sustain multiple Pilots (I can only think of two at the moment). And you can do Duty missions qute fast by yourself, Doing them faster in a group, than solo, takes Pilots of Equal skill (whatever the base skill, the second person has to be faster, or, as fast as the first). Disabling ships so others can hit them and gain xp, and waiting for them to do so, equals down time for at least one of the Pilots. It's Not like Planet side combat at all. There's very little in space which a group makes faster. GBs are one of those things, and, Possibly Vettes, though, A tube full of missiles and the Vette is down awfuly fast. A missile to a GB engine ends that encounter rapidly as well.

See? you get it. They do not get it. You get it though.

Late last night I was in Deep Space and I kept finding this guy in a Krayt. He was there "helping" someone in his gunner seat. I kept trying to tell him it wasn't ver productive xp grind since I sent him packing every 5minutes, and really a Duty mission, even one with 2 people, would have been far more efficient than splitting the xp you manage to snag before the crazy fish in the Xwing sends you back to check the condition of Dath Station again.

The conversation began after he started cussing at me for sending him my warning tell. I wouldn't have bothered with the warning tell, but the first time I saw him, and sent warning shots, he stopped, turned, and flew INTO them. I kid you not. I warned him by tell the next time, and he actually looked like he was gonna fly straight and level and hyper out. Then he turned.... ah well inevitable death #2. Then the smack talk began. 'you can only kill me when im busy' 'my droid programs weren't on' 'if we hadnt already been damaged' 'when im done ill com back with my fighter' I hope Dimmu sees this, he was there for the very beginning but missed all the really fun stuff later. After about 8 deaths total, 2 of them when he tried his darnedest to get me outright with rockets and all, he stopped jabbering and stopped coming back. I spent about an hour waiting for is return in his fighter, but no love.

Yeah, I'm really that much of a jerk, and not particularly sympathetic to foulmouth people who try to use the PvP zone for other things, and complain when someone kills them.

I had a guy I used to fight like a rabid dog and wet cat with, whom I've made peace with since my hiatus. He asked me to help him grind his Tier 2 skills and I agreed.

He sat in the top turret of my Nova Courier, and I flew us around in Kessel. Now, some might argue, but to me, as a POB enthusiast, I consider a trained gunner to be as much a godsend and a well practiced wingman. As long as he was sitting in the turret earning his keep (we managed to get enough xp for two skill boxes for him only the two of us aboard), I'm cool with helping people grind as a turret rider. No freebies, though, and no exit missions.

If someone's on a subsequent pilot profession, and willing to be a gunner that doesnt just sit there, I'll help them when I can, sure. But it's not doing new pilots any favors to power them through tier1-2.

Certainly I'm going to start as Freelancer, but I was planning either RSF->Imp->Rebel or SA->Rebel->Imp for faction purposes and as setup for later, once I choose to go on to 9 squadrons. How are the sides balanced on Starsider, if anybody could tell me?

Go Corsec and get the badge, XP bonus, Borstel, level 8 engine and shield. Then choose a faction path.

I'll definately agree with that. I did most of Tier 2 for the first time as a gunner in a YT. Not for the XP, but because the pilot was awesome, and I was having a lot of fun helping people get their 'vettes. But because of that, I was completely unprepared for Tier 3, and being in Storm Squadron made it even worse. While it is fun, I strongly recomend against that sort of grinding early on.

I just started a new character on Starsider, wasn't really happy with the name upon reflection, and REstarted ... so no 75k bonus. It should be interesting to see how long it takes to get the first mastery, and how long to work up a Pilot/SW. Now I just need to decide which squadrons to do for one of Rebel/Imp/Privateer as a midpoint (and whether I want to end up as Rebel or Imp). Any suggestions?

I alway's help if I have time. I don't just take them up though. I'll fly there wing and offer them 3 choices:

1) I'll fly your wing and cover your tail. This involved me keeping them alive while they kill. This also helps my wingman skills and helps teach me how to cover someone else and work as a team.

2) I'll disable everything I can and let them get the kills. Just helps my skills in general piloting.

3) I'll kill everything that comes our way. Just helps my skills and general piloting as well as providing some loot items I can RE.

I will not help a pilot through the entire pilot tree. I will teach the pilot about RE jobs, good components to use, and Droid Programs while flying thier wing. This will hopefully produce some more pilots with some decent skills that can eventually be opponents in Space PvP battles.

I figure the more people flying in space means more Space PvP battles and more people to go head to head with. This just means more fun in the long run........

I'm also teaching the new pilots how they can equip thier ships, grind thier pilot tree's and be a better all round pilot, IMHO, as I fly with them. As I've Aced only 2 squads and now working on my 3rd I am still learning myself.

I'd go with Freelance first, if I were you. I'd definately save Imperial for last. REd components are much more valuable to an Imperial pilot, as their ships are usually lower mass and have fewer gun slots. You'll want to squeeze as much into that TIE as you can. Freelancers are less dependent on REd equipment, as their ships are so big. By the time you're really straining the mass on your Dunelizard, you're about ready to upgrade to a Rihxyrk. Good ships for not having to worry about your limited shipwright skills, giving you longer to grind before they really matter.
