The other thing to keep in mind when enhancing the AI, is to keep each style of ship appropriate to its chassis. I've been tagging along different TIEs and I'm seeing the differentiation, just be sure we don't lose that when they upgrade.
I agree, but presently the only real differentiation are throttle parameters. They all behave in the same fashion, they just do it in different speed ranges.
Thanks shona for linking my post, that's exactly what I was getting at. I would like to see some jousting behavior come from Interceptor style ships, while heavier ships perform in different ways. And the comment about groupthink is another good thing to wish for.
AI that engages in different modes of behavior, AI that scales up from low tier to high tier, and AI that makes a group of ships that acts like a group.
I'd love to think that all along they've left one Dev guy in a back room plugging away a changes like this since launch, but I know better. Whenever they decide to change anything, it's gonna be a nightmare because whoever they get to work on it won't be the same people, or they will have done so much other stuff meantime, that they won't know where to pick up the pieces.

Silly question i know, but do you think its time they brought them back or at least, changed the behavior of the current AI to be something of a split between the joustbots and the current AI? Seems to me, the playerbase is plenty fast and plenty powerful now to handle that. Of course, even then you had jokers in a Ywing LP setting their ships up as stationary gun turrets. *cough*
I think it'd be fun if the current bots we have displayed this characteristic everynow and then.
The thing which I find annoying about the current AI though is how when you're being attacked by a large number of ships from the same wave you can 'herd' them.
My usual tactic is, let them get behind me, then I double back 'spraying' shots in their general direction then as they fly past I just kind of keep them all contained while I set about destroying them, using the radar to keep the majority of them in front of me.
But yeh, I think AI weapon damage should be brought UP somewhat and their shields dropped a little even if it were only t4's and 5's. I want to be made to -try- when I'm up against AI. It'd make the FP grnd slower probably but a hell of a lot more fun.

I hated those damn A-wing joustbots. But damn it felt good to bring one down. I say bring them back

I think AI jousting would be nice if brought back as another AI 'gimmick' that it uses sometimes. Rather, something it has the option of doing periodically to mix up it's manuevers some. Making certain ships only joust woudl just add another version of how things are now, with super-predictable patterns.
I personally would vote for mixing it up a bit and giving the AI a list of various manuevering strategies it can toggle through mid-fight, to make things more interesting than "get behind the ship and blast it into pieces while it can't shake you".

My only experience with jousting was as a noob pilot back in the day and it really got on my nerves.
I remember the "boss" at the end of tier 1 duty missions would be a t3 intercepter and with a z95 trying to hit that thing while it was jousting was impossible. Then I got a bit better and could hit it but took so long to take its engines with tier 1 equipment the AI would just give up and warp out, failing the mission. Nearly made me quit JTL I was so frustrated
Maybe bring it in at Tier 4 or 5 but not on the lower end ships, it would just get newer players would up.

At least at Tier 4 and 5. Let the new kids work their way into them.
You say that as if the Jousting AI would be harder. I thought the two primary issues with jousting AI was 1) how easy it became for experienced pilots to abuse their predictable, straight-line flight patterns and 2) it was near impossible to do ''get on their tail'' tactics against some of them.
With what we know now, jousting AI would get raped worse than before.

Its that predictablity is why i also suggested a modified version or combination of current AI with the joustbot AI.
At the least they should be speed up to match player ships.
