As far as I know it isn't abug, but then it could be as well.
At any rate, you could set that up for RE with other RE 5 items, but not with RE 10 items.
IF you were to have the msw drop it in the tool first, the resulting item would be Level 10, even if the other 4 were level 5.
P.S.:
RE and shipwright questions are usually best answered in the Shipwright profession forum. :}

I tried looking this up but couldn't find it. I'm not a shipwright, but I'm collecting level 10 parts to get RE'd. Once I get my 10 weapons can the ship wright then produce as many of the item that comes out as they want or is it just 1 item per every 10 parts?

Also make sure the shipwright puts the best item in first, before the other 'junk' items (so its the one that gets the improvements)

The only reason to put them in order is to select the graphics and name (assuming you don't rename them).
The stats chosen are the best of each item, so if you had two level 2 shields, one with great recharge and one with great mass, the combined has both the great recharge and mass, and a bonus to boot!

Not true. Best stats from each component is used when you RE. That is why you need to pay close attention to loot. Something may look like crap in just about every single category you look at initially, but if it has super low mass, for example, for a level 6 or whichever, it may be just asvaluable as a piece with high damage, recharge rate, etc.

The only difference on which item you put in first is this....
The End result will resemble the first item put in.
This means that if you like the LOOK of a particular Blaster (ex. 3 Purple Balls that shoot out together) then if you put that in first, the end result is that the weapon ends up like the first one you used.
The best example for me was the (pre-nerfed) reward engine... I loved the way it looked in my X-Wing, other engines looked ...LESS... So when I re-engineer it I will use the reward engine first, that way the look stays the same.
But the Stats on the End result is the BEST stat for each category, from EVERY Item involved. (sounds like a mouthful, I know) times the modifyer you qualify for on the item level.
Example level 3 reactors
Armor
Shields
Mass
Gen Rate
Item 1
75
75
1500
8000
Item 2
100
100
5000
6000
Item 3
60
60
3500
12000
As these are the best choices to use, it would look like this;
Armor 100 the Armour and Shields from Item 2
Shield 100 the Armour and Shields from Item 2
Mass 1500 the Mass from Item 1
Gen Rate 12000and the Gen Rate of Item 3
This would then be Multiplied by the appropriate bonus modifyer
I hope this explains it.

Just to clarify for me could someone tell me if
You need 10 items of the same part to give to a shipwright for one RE item
If I am right on that bit do theses items have to be the same make by that I mean like a sorosub or is it just a case off for example 10 shields requires 10 shileds of the same lvl and that is all

does the level of the SW affect the quality of RE jobs?
in other words, should you only use masters to RE your equipment?

No.
There are no variable factors in Reverse Engineering.
The only difference the Shipwrights skill makes is to the maximum level of components he/she/it is able to work with.
