I'd see this as an issue *if* there was actually something present in JTL where a force of more than 8 ships (not crew members, chatrooms help here), but actual ships) would be necessary...

There is a need, even if it's only common in one place at the moment. The major battles on Starsider have quite large groups, and this would help them. Also, I have often been in Corvette groups that exceed 8 and whileonly certain people may "need" to communicate, I find it very helpful to explain and teach the people there for the first time what to do/not do.

Nice work, man, my thumbs just punched holes in the ceiling from going up so fast. Hopefully we'll get some info about the feasibility of maintaining JTL groups soon. Always good to know the powers that be are aware of the problem.

Nice guide However this wasn't my problem... (I know very well how to use channels...)

Problem is that- according my experience through multiple missions - there is allways at least one person who hasn't never used channelsor haven't used them long time. And because channel and chat tab user interface isNOTcurrentlyuser friendly - it will take lot's of effort to get everyone to same channel. You might wonder how it is possible that writing "/chatroom join chat.somechannel" is so hard for some people - but it seems to be for so...

It is true that currently there is fewer need to groups larger than 8. When I started to organize corvette mission runs in my server - it was normal that there was 15-25 players in mission. Nowadays it is hard to find 4-5pilots tomission and these numbers are decreasing. (IMHO: They should implement server merge)

However new expansion is going to bring these mining operations to space.I am assuming that effective mining operations are going to need something like10-12people (2 mining ships with crew and 2-4 escorts/scouts). (Assumming that there is still enough players and rewards from crafting after CU...)

I stoped wondering when I had a user complaining about his printer not working. I pushed the ON button.

And yes, it is NOT user friendly. And bugged like nothing. *still tries to remove typos from the invitees list*

Although I agree with the groups (space) of 20, the group "leader" could use a POB ship and bring up say 4 group leaders of 8.

Those 4 group leaders relay commands/tactics to the fighters from the POB ship so each group has 7 actual fighters fighting and 1 leader coordinating from a POB ship.

Right on, Greevo.

Wish people would start thinking out-of-the-box. Change isn't always bad, ya know. There are some great opportunities to improve JtL when considering this whole grouping subject. I wouldn't mind seeing a feature introduced where the value of POB ships could be increased in all aspects of space. Consider (rough idea):

Group is reduced to 8 people in space. Group chat is used to communicate via the 8 members as /groupchat works right now. New "squad" feature added that allows 2 or more group leaders to form as a squadron. The person who invites is the squad leader (must be on POB ship - heck make them have ground game SL skills if you want) and has the ability to issue groupsys commands and also specify WPs for individual groups. What you'd end up with is something like:

From Joe Pilot's perspective ...

::Joe GroupLeader invites you to his group, click yes to accept::

Group Chat: Heya Joe Pilot, welcome to the group. We're going to take out that group of Knats ... err Imps ... forming up behind the SD

Group Chat: Rgr

::Incoming message from Squad Leader: Group 1 ... Hello boys. Proceed to this WP and prepare for a strafe run against the Imps::

::a new WP appears on your screen::

Group Chat: Joe GroupLeader, ok let's go.

::Incoming message from Squad Leader: Group 2 ... You're playing defense tonight fellas. Form a defense position around our command ship (my POB). WP Attached

Hope that illustrates the idea at least. I see so many opportunities that can come from this group change. I'd seriously recommend that people consider what could really work and throw ideas out there. Worst that can happen is we get even some of what we ask for.

/salute

It's a shame I'm not coming from the same background of large-scale PvP that Tomo has, but there is at least one other reason that a limit of 8 in a space group would be a significant hinderance.

New grouping rules will allow up to 30 people of a POB ship, but is was also said (in the same announcement) that only people in the Pilot's group would be able to man stations. For a standard POB ship with a four player crew, that only leaves 4 more slots in the entire group. There would be zero chance of grouping more than two POB ships and having them fight effectively, and there would be no way to properly incorporate a POB ship into a moderately sized space group of 6 fighters (all single person models, since a two-seater would mean more group slots filled).

There are not a lot of times when a space group reaches over 8 members, but there *are* times, and typically those are the types of groups that should be *encouraged*, so hopefully this will get worked out well in the end.

Definitely some neat ideas here regarding uses of the 8 man team. I would like to say though that it would be even more neat to have space boosted up to 12 man teams so you could form up a full 12 man squadron.

Traditionally, fighter squadrons have been comprised of 12 fighters. Often the squad leaders of those squadrons would communicate with each other over separate comm channels. That said, if the devs are willing to put the time and effort into changing the max group level specifically for space, we might be better off just requesting the original 20 man group.

It would be neat if they allowed something like the tech console to be used to see an overhead of the battle going on

Now that would be cool. Unfortunately, that would be a lot of UI work, and UI dev time is very hard to come by. They're usually filled to their heads in work to do.

It would definitely give the POB ships more of a "Command Ship" type role that they play in the missions.

what would be nice is if your in a group you can see others wp in space, so you can meet them there if you get lost from the group.

If it's a group that's going to last any length of time, or you get separated, ask to be added to someone's friendlist, and add them to yours. adding a friend then using findfriend is a lot faster and more reliable than transcribing waypoints, it means no one has to stop to wait up.
