Rickon_Stark has it right...Joust them

Ya won't need ultra fast engines, ya won't need missiles at all, and ya won't need superior blasters. When they pop fly right at em firing all the time. When they pass, let em...just keep going. At around 900m turn around, line em up and blast em. Won't take more than3 passes to knock em out...even less if you target engines. However, be careful targetting engines when there are more than one. It messes up the joust.

Missiles are helpful so long as you are not breaking any of your normal firing patterns being distracted trying to achieve lock. Go after those A-Wings as if you weren't carrying missiles at all--but if you hear lock kick in, fire immediately. It may only add a shot or two's worth of damage, but when you're dealing with an enemy whose ability to dodge your fire is his greatest asset, that couple hits' equivalent can still be a big help.

As for having them custom made, it's my opinion that max damage is in fact the most important stat. On Mk III concussions, a single point of experimentation will raise min damage roughly 100 points and max damage roughly 200; while maxing damage may increase your damage variance, your average damage is raised significantly higher than it is if you experiment on min. I suppose consistency versus a higher possible payoff is something to be decided by your play style, but the way I see it, over time the advantage of max damage missiles is going to pay off over those with min.

I agree completely about the engine, though--go with the Inferno. If you're running EO3, your max speed in a Dunelizard will still be better than those tier 5 A-Wings, and the jump in PYR should be enough to let you hang with them through most turns.

If you are jousting single targets, another advantage is to adjust your shields to the front, since the majority of all hits will be on your front shields. I can complete Tier 4 destroy duty missions with my X-Wing by jousting, might take longer than if I was dogfighting, but I survive and tend not to take much damage, and if I am paying attention, I can make certain that I get no aggro-adds.
