na I'm sure you don't suck, there's just a learning curve, and luck of loot. Most of the stuff on my ship I looted, and early on I sacrificed things. I had very little armor and shields, but had a hella weapon. (at tier 2 I had a weapon that was 800-1700 damage)
But I'll give this as advice:
Use droid programs. These have been my key. Mainly, capacitor overload (makes your cap store more energy, and recharges faster) and cap to shield shunt. (takes the energy from your cap and transfers it to your shields) So if I'm ever in trouble I just hit shunt and it practicly instant-refills my shields.
Your second friend against the lambada's is emergency weapons. As you approach the lambada (or other tough big ship... excluding gunboats and corvettes..of course.) hit emergency weapons (pilot trick) and just wail on the thing. (preferably from front on lambadas..) and if you start taking damage hit shield shunt. YOu shouldn't have to pull out..
But in big battles, I can easily take 10+ fighters on me with shield shunt. Remember tho if our massivly outnumbered, disable, not destroy. You can come back for the kills later if you really want to. Even if your chasing one ship, a formation may be coming behind you. When you notice this go ahead and make a U turn to make some of that fire hit your front shields, and make them pass you. This way they arn't floating behind you, they'll have to turn around to start firing again. This gives you some more time to destroy that first target while not taking as much damage.
But above all, cap overload 3 and shield shunt4.. go post on your server forums if anyone knows a "ready chip vendor" and if anything put these inside your flight computer
Oh and once you hit 4/3/3/3 get the jedi starfighter.
I just got it last night but I took it up against nearly every possible scenario and with a 900 speed engine, and then engine overload (putting me well over 1000k speed) and when really necessary, boosters.. nothing could touch it, hell I had to teach myself to slow down for a change.
**EDIT**
changed weapon overload to emergency weapons-- BIG DIFFERENCE! oops!

yes. THis is why I said ready chips. Ready chips are basicly just computer chips that someone has put their droid commands on there. You don't need ready chips for programs you get taught from your faction.
So you can buy any faction's droid programs, granted they are on a chip. Then you just put the chip in your droid/flight computer
