The surviving Naleran security pilots gathered themselves in the squadron's briefing room. Argus looked wearily at the remaining pilots: Tarisa, Elle, and Brien Ki'er, the Bothan pilot.

"I won't pretend we're in a good situation," he said hoarsely. "We lost three pilots, and A'Lerris and Halyn are as good as dead. Their location is under a sandstorm now, and by the time it passes, I doubt we'll be able to find any wreckage. Since Lance didn't come back, we have to assume he's either dead or betrayed us."

"What did he do?" Elle asked. "Why'd the cruiser stop firing on us?"

"I'm not sure," Argus lied. I have a pretty damned good idea what he did. I knew I shouldn't have trusted him. "What matters, now, though--"

The Zabrak lieutenant was interrupted by a long squeal from an astromech droid. The red-and-grey R2 unit, Deuce, slowly rolled forward, whistling quickly. When he reached the center of the room, he plugged himself into the holoprojector and an image of Halyn Lance sprang to life on the display.

"If you're hearing this, I'm probably dead," the ghostly image said. "If we ran into the Zynt'aia and it went badly, I probably did something strange to try to stop them, and I wanted to explain exactly who I am.

"You all met me as Captain Halyn Lance of the Rebel Alliance Starfighter Corps, currently assigned to Sabre Squadron. That is true. I am, at the time I recorded this, still holding that position, although I'm on special assignment at the Nalera mining facility. What I was, though, is probably of more interest to you."

The hologram smiled grimly. "I was Halyn Jessik of the Zynt'aia Order. Yes, I was the leader of the Zynt'aia pirates. I was the one who unleashed them on the galaxy. After I disappeared four years ago, the Zynt'aia seem to have lost a lot of their focus and started preying on more civilians and less smugglers. I regret a lot of the things I did as Jessik, but there's nothing I can do about that now. I've spent those four years since my disappearance flying with the Rebel Alliance, doing what I can to make up for the pain I inflicted on so many people.

"The Zynt'aia Order was never truly just about going after spice smugglers. We tended to hit civilian ships loaded with supplies we needed--food, ordinance, fuel, and so forth. We went after smugglers for the credits involved--spice sells better on the blark market than food. We weren't great crusaders. We weren't do-gooders. We were trying to make an easy credit at the expense of everyone else.

"I'm sorry if you feel I've betrayed you, but believe me--I would never go back to the Zynt'aia," Halyn's image said vehemently. "Not again, not ever."

The hologram hesitated. "I've appended contact information to this file. Deuce should provide it to you--it will allow you to contact the Rebel Alliance after I fail to make my meeting with an Intelligence agent to negotiate details of the exchange of starfighters for ore." He smiled slightly. "It's been an honor knowing you and flying with you. I wish I was there to see this through to the end.

"Lance out."

The hologram flickered and died. The four pilots sat in stunned silence at the lost Rebel's candor.

"We have to go after them," Elle said, rising.

Argus shook his head. "We'll need to talk to the Council and we need to get more pilots. We're not combat ready."

"To hell with that," Elle retorted. "I'm not going to be responsible for losing A'Lerris and Halyn when they could still be alive."

"Elle..." Argus tried.

"I'm going with her," Tarisa said, rising to her feet. The Bothan merely stood behind the Twi'lek, offering support.

Argus sighed. "Alright. I have to meet with the Council, though. You three take snubfighters down and try to find them." He frowned. "If you can get that damned R2 to cooperate, one of you should take Halyn's snubfighter--it's faster and better-armed than ours."

The other three security pilots were already halfway out the door. The Zabrak sighed and shook his head. Dammit, Commander, you'd better still be alive down there. I can't do this by myself.

If you write my History and Structure of English paper, plus my Shakespeare paper, I'll write more story tonight. Since I doubt you will, it'll have to wait a day or two until I get caught up again.
