Im 4444 Neutral and having major problems with the Gunboat I need to kill for the last quest.. Does anyone have a suggestion on tactics for these? i.e. a way to keep from losing all my shields in a few seconds, good missile to use etc.
I figure I need to disable its engines so it cant maneuver then I can deal with it much easier but I cant even get its shields below 70% before I die ro have to run..
Im thinking Ill have to find someone to help me here but I dont really know anyone that is a decent pilot so any help would be great.

concussion missiles to drop the shields, then strafing runs to disable the engines andthen sit 545m away to finish it off

Get a friend. While the gunboats chase you, your friend can sit at 550m back from them and blast away.

i am at this point right now (corbantis server) and was just about to post the same sort of question because i can't seem to get past that frelling gunboat either. it was kinda funny, the first time i charged it head-on thinking i'd drop the engine real quick and then finish off his escorts.. WRONG. heh. soooo... concussion missiles.. gotta find me some of those i guess...

I did it just last night... Took out the escorts first, dropped two mark I space bombs on it, then just jousted it, scream in at it, boost at 600m, fire everything I had at it, keep boosting away from it, recharge shields, rinse repeat, only took a few minutes and never touched my armor... Hooray for good components and flying a ship with 3 level 8 guns on it

I am on corbantis and helped a friend with this one yesterday. I tried it a few times in a Rihk in the past but I found the only solution was strafing runs with a grevious fighter. If you send me a /tell (to padrig in game) I can help you if haven't beaten it yet when I am online.

IMO concussion missiles did squat for me. I unloaded 10 of them into this quest gunboat and the shields where not down all the way yet. However, after having done it ( and then killed another one in Kessell) I have some further insight.
Strafing is important.
Not getting within 450-500m is important.
Capacitor to Shield level 3 or 4 is a must.
Load up as many high damage weapons as you can so the few shots you get to make on the strafe runs really pack a punch.
Since this version of the gunboat will constantly try to follow you its hard to get behind the thing to kill its back turret etc. I just target it and strafe run it trying to pull away after hitting 2 or 3 times each run (before I get less than 450m from the enemy). I wore down the shields and once they got to 0% I target the Engine and keep it targeted as I do more strafe runs (armor has to get tore down too of course).
Once it stops moving I just get behind it and just out of the rear turrets range and finish it off.
My first successful gunboat kill (night before last) I had to go to the station and repair 3 times as I learned how to do it right. After that it is still tough but alot easier than before.

Ah that mission was fun solo.
The corsec one with 2 gunboats right? I had no idea that it was that difficult, but it was such a rush.

Well here's my story...
I've tried jousting. I've tried concussion missles and jousting. I've tried concussion missles, jousting, Cap to Shields IV and jousting some more and C2S4ing some more.
In six attempts the best I've done is gotten its shields to 58%. At which point the gunboat disappeared (no, it didn't hyperspace it just dis-a-freaking-peared). I got no failure message, no completed message - nada. Mission was still active, but no gunboat anywhere. Grr.
I'm in a B-22 with fairly decent equipment and am about to blow a gasket.
Any other advice?
Or, any Intrepid Freelancers available to lend a hand with this?

Here's a decent trick to those Imp style gunboats -
Take a fast fighter with a decent punch. MAKE SURE YOU'RE RUNNING DROID PROGRAMS and if possible a level 8 reward shield. Go head to head with the gunship - charge it! SOE's website calls this jousting, it's more often called strafing. Now, when you go for it, shoot straight on and target the engine - that's very important.
This strategy works great for both Imperial and Rebel gunboats. Here's the trick - when you are about to pass them, go UNDER the gunboat and boost. This exposes you to the least amount of turrets for the least amount of time. For Imperial gunboats, like the one in this mission, I THINK (think, mind you) that the bottom is the side with the shorter fin.
Once you're past, boost away and Cap to Shield Shunt (you ARE running droid programs, right?). When you're ready, and only when you're ready, turn around and go for another shot.
Carry Chaff, gunboats like to use missiles.
When the engine is done, fly into the blind spot and toarch 'em.

Well, I finally nailed that darn thing. I decided to put a little more mass into the equation and pick up a Rihkxyrk (which I've named "Gunboat Diplomacy" ;-) ). Three guns did the trick. My technique probably wasn't pretty, but I won - so I'm happy.
Now it's time for the 'Vette.
