Is this another one of those deeds where you have to do the quest in order to unpack it? Or am I able to buy it off anyone lucky enough to get one before the quest got bugged? Btw, is the escort mission bugged for everyone on this quest?

You don't have to do the quest, you can buy the deed from someone and generate the ship.

Typically an expensive endeavour, in light of the mission being uncompletable. I'd wait, honestly. As they are right now, they will disappoint you.
The fix is due next Publish, that I've seen posted here.

how do you guys set it up what run do you have your lazer, tractor, gun in. (please say gun 0,1,2 i can never recall what is what. and how you run your crew and how much can you get if run smooth

Do people actually use the Y-8? I have never, ever seen one flying around. I have the deed but have never generated it.

I don't believe Whirr's response was a troll or meant as one. He was simply stating that the ship is so useless, no one uses it.Therefore, he and I doubt you'll get much of a response, if any. I'm in the same boat, I have the deed and have never generated the ship, norhave ever seen one in space.
However, I guarantee, I'll be checking it out post Pub 24.

well i took some ppl up (that cant mine on their own) we did "ok" just wounding if anyone out there had soem exp in teh matter. and what is the tracker beem good for it seamed like it does not pull anything or hold.

I really wish I could help. All I can tell you is the tractor beam on my Krayt works fabulous, but obviously it's not a Y-8.

Using a Y-8 is just not an efficient miner at this time. Wait for Publish 24 to come out...that should breathe some life into that garbage scow.
A tractor beam is used in lieu of a mining laser to pull in the final small bits of asteroid. If you aim it correctly, it will lock in on the chunk and pull it in. You get more yield that way as opposed to blasting the chunk with a laser. Once the Y-8 mission is fixed, run it and it will give you an intro to it.
