I was just wondering if the tractor beam can be used after the Y-8 mission. for maybe slowing enemy figters as well as asteroid mining

I did the Y-8 missions this weekend, played around with the tractor beam, but didn't see it really do anything.
How does this work?
Is it able to pull in the bigger chunks so that you don't have to chase the smaller chunks? How is it different than blasting?
Sorry for the noob question ... the worst part is that I'm not even a noob!

You can use the tractor beam to haul in the small chunks. It will do nothing on the medium chunks.
Target /follow the medium, toogle Tractor beam on, and tap the chunk with your mining laser a few times till it break, notice how your cargohold will fill up and usually most of the small chunks are gone.
You will also get a better yield useing the Beam vs using your mining laser on the small chunks.
for those who escape, you need to target the small chunk directly, instead of aiming at the green targeting thingy.
For me the best way is to aim slightly above the chunk.. but I guess you will find a sweetspot yourself.

Even better is to set up two macros. One setup to turn the tractor beam on. And the second to target and follow a asteroid chunk. Pretty much run space mining on autopilot now, just a few double taps from a MARKIII mining laser on the large and the middle size chunks, then rinse and repeat on the small chunks. he is right, the tractor beam nets you 2-3% better qty resources over the mining laser. Don't shoot, tractor it!
1550units of toid in 10 minutes is common.

I would add that a crafted tractor beam outperforms the quest one, and that once you have a chunk targetted (I use a macro) that autopilot will land it in the sweetspot automatically.

But you know, a Y-8 class tractor beam that would be able to pull in the large chunks would be an excellent idea. It would make the mining ship preferred for mining instead of the Krayt or some other multi-hardpoint ship.

Hi,
I was wondering if the tractor beam you get from doing the Y-8 mining ship mission is any different than the tractor beam shipwrights can craft.
And if so, what's the difference ?
thx

I use my crafted TB and it works fabulous. However, I still have no idea if it works better than the quest TBwhich is why I don't stock these. I won't sell anything I cannot prove will be better than what a customer already has.

my reasoning also, until Pub24, I put no faith in any of the space mining gear except a large starfighter cargo hold, and 3 LvL 3 mining lasers on a Krayt. The most annoying part is landing to empty the hold.

currenly all i use for space mining is the equipment i got from that quest, and i can't complain about it, it does what it has to do ![]()
I ordered a mark 3 ming laser and a large cargo hold with my local SW, and i was wondering if i should order a tractor beam too.
I asked it, but he didn't know if the quest TB and the crafter TB are different, because he doesn't have the quest TB...

i wish like items looted in combat that astroids would go right to inventory. maybe having the cargo hold on the POB makes sense where more then one person could be helping mine but its still to have to land every 1500 minerals
