So to begin with, I'm a tier 2 Imp pilot. I'm doing the storm squadron missions and I can only get as far as the mission where you have to stop a transport from jumping into hyperspace, then you get attacked by waves of enemy ships, and so on. Now here's my prob, I can get to the point where I disable the transport, but when the enemy ships come and attack me, I get the crap kicked out of me. I can't remember if they are tier 3 or 4 ships, but after about 3-4 hits, my shields are gone, then after about3-4 more hits, my armor is completely gone, and then after that, I'm sure you can figure out how long I last. I really don't understand what I'm doing wrong. I'm pretty sure my starfighting tactics are decent enough to put up a good fight, I 've gotten real good at staying behind a shipwithout it "shaking" me, and I'm not too incredibly bad at "shaking" enemy ships off me. I'm not using the defaultTIE that is given to you when you first become an Imp pilot, but I'm using another basic TIE that a friend gave me that has better stats (more mass, hit points, etc.) As far as I know I can't upgrade to a better TIE yet because I'm not certified to do so yet. I've done numerous vendor searches for better parts, but it seems really hard to find better parts than the ones I already have (I'm not saying the parts I have now are the best, it's just that after replacing my parts with ones that have slightly better stats, it didn't REALLY make my ship that much better.) What's worse is that I'm not able to learn new skills form the flight instructor until I finish his mission. Can anyone help me out here, any ideas or tips?? Are there other instructor's I can go to to learn higher flight skills, or am I stuck at this level until I finish this mission?? Any help would be VERY MUCH appreciated. Thx in advance

First off. Are you using droid commands? These will help greatly if you arn't. Check the stickied pilot FAQ at the top of the forums for more info.

Secondly. Its good that your getting better at sticking to an opponents 6, but be careful not to overcommit yourself multiple ship encounters. If you take a couple shots from a ship, pull back and loop around on the ship that is flashing in you're radar. The AI patterns change to scramble mode after you hit a ship so it give you a few seconds to either finish that one offwhile the first ship is in scramble mode or head back to your first target.

At 2111 Imp Pilot you can use a TIE/IN, which has around 40K mass. You could also pick yourself up a Heavy TIE Fighter, those can have up to 96K mass, but you'll probably have to order it from a Shipwright. I would recommend contacting a SW and asking what they recommend for components, or post your equipment stats here along with your exact pilot skill level (2222, 2211, etc).

Is the mass on your current ship close to 11k, or close to 20k? You should be able to use a 20k ship (basic TIE Fighter, not the Light Duty type) if you're into Tier 2, and that should allow for better weapons and shields.

Thx for the tips guys, I'll definitely try some new things out once I'm in-game. I never really payed much attention to the droid commands, I had no idea they could be so helpful. I'll post the specs on my ship/parts a little later on when i log in.

tbh droid commands only get worth it around t3, ive never had much problems with T2 missions.

Probably the most important info has already been given, and thats not to stick with one enemy till you blow it up (if you take awhile to blow it up). If you chase one ship the AI is smart enough to form a gang on youre six sometimes up to 5 ships in a big blob, then the ship youre chasing will fly straight so they can shoot you up good, tbhtheir actually quite intellegent sometimes. easy solution is to look on youre radar and break off to attack the biggest blob of red on it. All you need is one shot to connect and the group will split appart and take another minute to reform.

Sounds like you're off to a pretty good start. Allow me to add a couple things:

First off, Storm Squadron is the most difficult pilot squad in the game, hands down. Contratulations for choosing it, and I hope you stick with it because the skills you must learn to succeedare quite worthwhile.

While getting loot during your pilot grind is nice, remember that your primary objective is to advance...ie, complete the mission. Otherwise, you will reach a point of diminishing returns as far as loot is concerned. While doing the Storm Squadron missions, if you find yourself failing the missions, start disabling the enemy ships. It takes fewer shots to disable than to destroy, which will help immensely. Use the [ and ] keys (the bracket keys, next to the P on your keyboard, not the word and, heh) to cycle through your target's components. After the targets are disabled, if you have time, go clean them up to get the loot/exp, but not at the cost of failing the mission (ie, don't let your escort get too far ahead while you go back 1k to clean up some disabled targets, that kind of thing).

Welcome to the Pilot profession, and enjoy

In concert with what has been posted above, I'd recommend the following:

  • Check your loadout. If you're using non-RE'd looted parts primarily, I guarantee you're screwing yourself. Crafted stuff has gotten SO much better than when JTL first launched. I always build a new ship around crafted stuff and then tweak as I get loot to RE. At your level, a loadout based upon good Mark II gear should work very well. Remember that for TIEs, usually engine, shield, and guns are the most important. Feel free to skimp on boosters and armor, especially.

  • Check your ship. This probably goes without saying, but if you're still using the noob ship, you're screwing yourself. At your level you can either use the TIE/ln or the Heavy TIE. The large mass of the Heavy can become a crutch, so I'd recommend using the TIE/ln.

  • Use the droids. Droid commands are buffs for your ship. And you can use any command you can get a chip for, not just the commands you know due to your level.

  • Fly smarter. This includes not chasing someone down when another ship is pounding you. This includes disabling rather than destroying when you're overwhelmed. This includes flying evasively as the tracking abilities of most of the NPC's is pretty bad.

  • If all else fails, get a wingman. I know that there's a lot of pride in soloing this stuff, but there's no shame in calling in a buddy for help. Just don't rely too much on an Ace doing your work for you. In the end that will stunt your growth more than help you. But another Tier 2 pilot or even a Tier 3 pilot is a good choice for a wingman.

As Domingo, disable. That is the best way to bring a bad situation under control. And in some cases it will slow down the spawn time on new mobs. That way you don't get 2 more waves before you're finished with the first one.

Droid programs are your best friends at any pilot level but especially at lower levels. Everytime I start a new squadron I always train droid programs first until I get to 3333. then I'll usualy go for 4333 or 3433. Droid programs will give you a nice edge over the bad guys. And as you are able to use higher level flight comps you'll be able to pack in more programs.

As an Imp pilot you can get yourself into a TIE/H and not have to worry about getting another ship until you pin on your Ace wings.

Also keep in mind that a TIE, any TIE, works best with wingmates. It may not always be possible to get people to fly with you but if you can get a few wingmen do it. Especially for Storm Squadron. That squadron is a BEAST!

Beyond that practice, practice, practice. Find a good spawn of Droid Starfighters to match your pilot level, jump in there, and see how long you last.

You'll also want to work on your ego. Sure good parts, good ship, and skills help...but an ego is what makes a great pilot and Ace pilot.

Droid Commands, Droid Commands, Droid Commands. Especially Weapon Overload (WO)and Capacitor to Shield Shunt (CtSS). When I went thru my second mastery as a Rebel, I have noticed I am having no problems at all, even at the lower level. As a privateer, I didn't use any Droid Commands until nearly a master. Now, it's almost too easy. WO3is what everyone uses, but as a low level pilot, you may not be able to put that in there. Start out with the lower levels of these and work your way up as you skills go up. You can go up to CtSS4, but WO4 causes too much of a drain on your reactor, evenwith master parts. With these commands, you'll shoot less per kill and if they get on your six, just CtSS before they get to your Armor and it's like a whole new shield generator.

Hey everybody thx for all the advice, I REALLY appreciate it. Sorry I haven't posted back to you yet, but here's the situation. I stated earlier that I'm tier 2........I was wrong, I'm only actually 2/1/1/1............and keep in mind that my squadron leader WILL NOT let me train at this point. Also keep in mind that this limits me to only level 2/3 ship equipment. Here's a basic rundown of my TIE and its components:

"Obsidian 9"

Mass: 17248/19656

Energy: 8352/13096 (Reactor Generation Rate)

Chassis: 528/528

Engine: Pitch, Yaw, Roll, Engine Top Speed- 56.0, 53.3, 58.1, 54.8

Shield: Front, Rear, Recharge Rate - 519.8, 519.8, 4.88

Front Armor: Armor, Hitpoints - 204.2, 313.8

Rear Armor: Armor, Hitpoints - 146.4, 268.7

Capacitor: Energy, Recharge Rate - 895.0, 29.7

Weapon: Damage, Vs. Shields, Vs. Armor, Energy/Shot, Refire Rate - 701.7-793.4, 0.520, 0.510, 24.6, 0.350

What's the mass on these? I'm not sure where you managed to use it all up...

One think you must aquire for imp pilot is a decent reactor, i have a 1k mass 12400 gen reactor. Thats enough to run any ship due to the one gun situation and with decent guns you can use it easily in a TIE advanced and maybe an oppressor.

After the reactor get the best engine/shield and weapons you can fit in, then worry about getting the other stuff in.

Best order after that is probably DI (use a lv2 870 mass-30 spd probably), then booster, and finally armor (which isnt needed if youre shield and shunting skills are good enough).

Imp pilot really needed nice low mass RE'd parts, but i would go crafted until you can get them.
