ARG I am so fricken fed up with these missions! I understand that they are supposed to be hard yeah it makes you a better pilot. I also have no problem with doing missions over again if I fail, But what I can't stand is how fricken long it takes to complete one mission, and how they are set up!

I don't have 6 hours to play every fricken day so when I can play I would like to accomplish something. ButI end up spending 2 hours doing a damn mission that involves, go here-dock-go-here-Kill rebels-escort shuttle-go here-dock Which is fine it isn't that hard to do if you are not an idiot, but then the mission turns into Kill tier 4 Gun boat. What the hell that's a large jump in difficulty, and to put it at the END of a 2 hour mission is just absolutely cruel and unusual punishment. Learning how to kill gun boats effectively should not involve hours of shooting down x-wings in order to "learn" the best way to kill a GB.

And on top of that dying means I have Start the entire mission over, to waste another of my few available days I am able to play, on a horribly designed mission system.

Let me ask. You're in the Imperial Storm Squadron? I've heard they have a lot of long escort missions

and 3-4 missions are pretty much meant to be done in a group...simple as that..

unless your a 2nd or 3rd master pilot you wont be able to solo them with ease

I know that mission! Inquisition mission to get you the last box in tier 3!

I died 6 times until i was told how to do it.

Ready?

First thing you MUST have is a TIE Interceptor. If you don't have one, you will not likely be able to do what follows.

Next you need a flight computer. V3 will work just fine.

Next you need to get 2 "Ready Chips"

1> Capacitor Overload

2> Capacitor to Shield Stunt

You also need a nice booster....Mine was only 12.3 recharge...but it was 1275 boot at 80.3 used per tick.

(Figuring you know you need all the other stuff...solid weapon also would help.)

Getting up to the Gunboat part is easy. (In-system Hyperspace is your friend.)

OK.....you are heading to the gunboat!

Make sure you have Capacitor Overload running.

Make a straight on jousting run with the Gunboat.

IGNORE the X-WINGS!!!!

Target the Gunboats ENGINES!

Burst at about 300 or so meters. Once he has ripped your back and front (I had 1296 front/back shields and he never hit my armor) use SHUNT. That should give you lots of shields back.

Keep flying straight away and SHUNT as needed until full.

Rinse and repeat the above until the Gunboat has no more engines.

Then....instead of jousting him again....stay where you boosted to.

The X-Wings will come to you.

Before I finished the last X-Wing, the Gunboat self-destructed.

Once I dropped the last X-wing, got completed message and VIOLA!

Try it...it does work.

I've been getting my butt kicked on Tier 3 3rd mission Vortex Squadron. Have to find the smuggler base and kill the leader. I'm stuck in a stupid LongProbe and cant keep up with the Tier 4's from the mission. Hoping to get a Z95 Heavy to try. Does this end up with a gunboat in the end as well?

Yes, it can be extremely frustrating when you are first learning to Fly. And learning is key. In a great many respects JTL is nothing at all like ground. For one thing, Everything here is ultimately soloable...

This Forum is chock full of useful, well-written and PRACTICLE articles and guides. The stickies are excellent starts.

Equipment Makes a difference, a big difference; Good, Reverse Engineered Engines, RE'd WEapons, a Good Shield, and a decent Capacitor and, DROID COMMANDS are key.

Knowing how to Fly is PARAMONT. Dive into that cloud of oncoming fighters, and be able to swing around to Their Sixes completely unscathed. Disable, Disable, Disable. It takes time, and it takes practice. It also takes some basic knowledge of just what YOU, as a Pilot, are able to do. People aren't kidding when they say it's possible to solo the vet. Know what you can ask of your SHIP. A great many people think they and their vessel are uber, because their weapon has, what they feel, is a High Damage, and outrageous Numbers vs either Shield OR armor. There are a great many factors that go into what makes a good component, and, Droid Commands are a large part of that.

Early on it's easy to fall into the trap of believing you REALLY have a handle on things, when, in fact, You Don't. At tier 3 are you using the BEST level 6-7 RE'd weps you can get? Do they do .65 % (or better) damage to BOTH (Both is key, not just one or the other) Shields and Armor?

Does your engine have high PYR stats as well as a decent Base Speed? A Reverse Engineered (not Player Crafted) lvl 6 Engine (tier III) can hit PYRs in the low 70's. While your speed might only be 82, or so, you GAIN manueverability, which is what you will NEED to be able to Dodge incoming fire, and TURN on your opponent and blast them out of space.

The Y-Wing... is just whacked. yet, You CAN muddle through. I Soloed my way through Tier II and III in my Y-Wings, with substandard equipment and relentless persistance and... enormous frustration. The thing is a Boat. a Heavy Z-95 HeadHunter (90K Mass, costing about 250K on Kauri) is a MUCH better Vessel to work through these levels, but, it CAN be done, even with crap for parts and insufficient skills, just, expect Clumps of Hair to be sprouting between clenched, shaking fists as you try over and over again on some of the more tedious missions.

Missions can last awhile. I fly for the joy of being in space. I love it. If you are here SOLELY for the Badge and just want this ... Over. Then Group and get out. You don't need to learn how to fly, you don't need to know what ship to use, or how to tweak it, or, even what Commands to use, you just need to have a true Ace take pity on you, or, failing that, 20 Noobs to help you run your missions.

If, however, you love this as much as the rest of us, then, let it Hurt. Fly, Fly, Fly. and READ the stickies!

The first thing to do when you get in-sector is, bring up all the hyper points. Jump in front of them (assuming there is one) and aim for a point well in front of them. Distance isn't so important if you can get them also doing the work of closing it for you.

Ahh It's nice to see other people struggle with the same thing, and have gotten through it. It's taking me a while to realize that JTL is really skill, if you can't solo stuff its because you don't understand everything and how to fly. I'm learning slowly (just started using droid commands at 3322) but man playing for two hours on one mission and then getting to a gun boat you don't have any idea how to approach is very frustrating, especially when I had its weapon down to 20% when I was disabled.

Reading the stickies has helped alot, but it still takes alot of trial and error, and frustration especially when you don't know a good place to buy better equipment

But It seems like the ebest strategy for these GB is to fly right past them firing away, Will have to try it

yeah, lots of strafing runs pretty much sums up how to take one down.

there's also a nice blind spot underneith the gunboat. so if you can, try to do your fly by from the underside.

NO!! Strafe toits aft, thenpull up and away whilerolling and twistingafter you pass within 100 meters. If you do a flyby, you're giving it a free shot at your ass with its primary guns mounted forward. You're going to take hits till you get comfortable with maneuvering, but stay behind them, where their firepower is limited. When you get your nose aimed away from it, hit the booster and get out beyond 540 meters before circling back. If you need time to regen your shields, get beyond its gun range, then match speed till you're reset for another run.

The trick to gunboats for someone who's not a hot hand on the stick is BE PATIENT.Its not some fighter you can zoom in and blow away in a single barrage.

Well I finally got a Z95 Heavy today, loaded it up and went back to Endor, first try forgot to hit overcharge on capacitor and took a beating. Second time I ran my programs and made it through no prob. Took a while to disable a Tier 5 but I stayed on his six the whole time, not taking any hits. The Z95 Heavy makes the Y-Wing look like grandma's ship.

Grats! Sounds fantastic, as a note, thanks to your post I am also picking up nice tips on Gunboat Tactics. The posts in This thread, combined with another, have offered new strategies I have been anxious to try.
