Thread: Question About Joysticks and Force Feedback

Hi all, I have a question about joysticks and force feedback.
I am looking into buying a joystick for JTL, and I saw two I really like, the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro(No Force Feedback) and the Logitech Force 3D(Force Feedback). Obviously the Force Feedback joystick is more expensive.
Heres my question : Is it worth it to buy a joystick with force feedback for JTL? Or should I go for the cheaper one without Force Feedback?

I own a FF J-stick. I have the FF option turned off, but I LOVE the adjustable spring return rate

I never liked force feedback, but that's my personal preference. I never found the "feel" to be really convincing.( I've flown real aircraft, but I can't say I know what it's like to get shot at
) So i would say try it out, and if you like it, go for it.

I wouldn't bother with FF. I'm with the other posters on this one: the effect has never seemed right to me, and is more of a distraction than an immersion factor.
If you want to spend extra money over a standard joystick, I'd recommend looking into a HOTAS setup. Very useful for JtL, I've found, but not cheap.

Saitek makes the X-45 HOTAS system, and it is like $50. I relly like it, but need to figure out how to clip the spring, it is way to tight.

I used a FF Joystick for quite a while (Logitech Wingman Strike Force 3D). Force Feedback has nice feelingbut also has a lot of disadvantages:
1) It ruins your aiming when you are hit and distracts you more than it helps in tough fights.
2) There is lots of people who enjoy crashing into you while flying (as there is no collision damage) and if you ever turn around from your PC your joystick can suddenly jump from one die to another (possibly against a wall if you moved it there)
3) This kind of Joystick is heavy, bulky and requires a lot of power. The extra power (at least at my old joystick) used to heat up the joystick even if i did not have my PC turned on
4) The constant corrections of the pilot leads to increased wearout of the joystick. It will soon get inaccurate at the center.
I now bought myself a Logitech Freedom 2.4 Cordless Joystick... I am very happy with it. It is accurate, light and does not have two heavy cables like my old FF joystick. The batteries hold very long too

The logitech freedom 2.4 is what I use as well. No cables, batteries hold pretty long, and even for someone like me who has never really used a joystick so far (I played even wing commander and privateer with keyboard) it was easy to get the hang off.

Saitek Joysticks are pretty good across the board too... from the entire flight systems (X-somthing) to the Cyborg version Joysticks.
I went for Logitech because the shape of their joysticks is more ergonomical... but Saitek Joysticks have the plus that they work for left hander too and that you can adapt them to your hand.

I just got the Logitec Extreme 3D Pro and I'm loving it. Having 12 buttons helps a lot as well.
of course, I just upgraded from a $14 game pad, so anything was going to be an improvement.

They still make the X45? I almost bought one of those, but held out for the X52. And aside from the huge cost of the latter (not to mention the several month wait for JtL's devs to get it to work right) it was quite worth it.
Doesn't work for southpaws, though. But lotsa buttons!

Same Joystick and I love this thing. I do have to reorganize the buttons though

I don't think they still make it, but it is still available, and even cheaper now that the X52 is out.
I played with both, and got the cheap one because the blue glowie LED was the only "extra" on the X52 that attracted me at all, and an LED was not worth double the price

I have never seen either the x45 or x52 in Canada. If someone in up here knows where I can get one (preferably in person, not online) please let me know.
