Thread: weapon projectile SPEED

I'm interested in seeing a discussion of weapon projectile speed.
(If I've missed an existing one, please link).

It's clear that weapon beams, bolts, blasts, etc. don't all travel at the same speed. My question is, what determines a weapon's projectile speed?

Is is related to refire rate? (what most people mean when they say weapon speed)
Is it related to weapon level?
Is it related to projectile type? (beam, bolt, ball, etc.)
Is it related to weapon type? (blaster, disruptor, cannon)

Obviously pilots want the fastest projectile possible. If some way to tell can be found, this would help RE, as well as weapon valuation.

It seems like an important issue. On the Pilot side for example, what happens to your lead indicator when you mount weapons with different projectile speeds?

May the wisdom of the masters illuminate our search for knowledge.

Please contribute if you have data on this issue.
Does anyone deliberately use diff weapon projectile speeds to get a "spread"?
(or just use the fastest)?
You do compare projectile speeds, right?
(or does it not really matter to you)?

Thanks.

I replaced all my super heavy high power weps with faster less damage weps. Make sure you have a wep cap overload in your fc/astromech. Now I can pretty much shoot a solid stream of lazers out of my krayt. I do notice a loss of power but now I have extra mass to equip better shields and armor. I am also shooting 2X faster so thats why you need the wep cap overload and a decent capacitor.

Pardon, how is it clear? Every gun I have, installed in pairs, no matter the combination, all of the first shots land exactly at the same time, regardless of distance. Consecutive shots don't but then no 2 guns I have carry *exactly* the same refire rate.

At the level I am now, I use two weapons, one which has incrediable shield damage and one with just great all around damage. I have them on two separate buttons, so that I hit the ship first with everything I got, the when I move on and my capacitor is almot up I switch over to just the one cannon when the shields are gone. Always firing at something, no down time at all.

I don't believe there exists a stat for this attribute of the weapon. Thus, I would assume that if you're observing a difference in speed, it would be tied to the weapon type. My reasoning is simple: missiles travel at different speeds, andthese speeds cannot be changed by a SW, but the speed is determined by the type of missile.

i used to think there was a different speed on certain weapons too since with a laser beam type weapon and a ball projectile type weapon the beam appeared to travel faster from cockpit view.

but then i zoomed all the way out in third person and moved the camera a bit to the side to get a nice angle on it and fired agian, and it was obvious the two shots were right on top of each other the whole way.

As stated in the linked thread your shots all travel the same speed, but the refire rate is different. You certainly can get a good chain spread going on if you hold the trigger down.

For example, and I don't have the exact stats but going off the best of my memory.

In my Krayt I keep this basic load out.

Turret is an exp blaster, quick shot, maxed out on speed with everything else dumped into energy use.

My center guns consist of:

adv Ion cannon built with an armor effectiveness upgrade

Exps on speed, energy use and armor effectiveness.

I think its around 3.4 refire with a .36ish/.78 armor/sheild

adv Blaster built with a limiter

Exps on min damage and speed

My wings hold an expdisruptor built with a quickshot.

Exps on min/max, armor eff, energy use

I Have 3 groups set up that use:

Ion/blaster

Blaster/disruptor

All

You do get a steady flow and noticable difference of fire rate in using the second group specifically.

I rarely open up the whole can unless I'm going up against a gunboat, in which case I'll open and close her with em all. However I tend to go easy through the mid range process as ya never know when you'll need to shunt.

Speed is important, but, being in a heavier ship and lagging out in nebulas as I tend to do...I'd much rather make the majority of my shots do the damage they need to do.

Sorry guys, but I know for a fact my two weapons do NOT have the same speed projectiles. I don't know how this is not clear to others, but I have seen it on a friend's ship as well. They are set up to fire simul., but the yellow lighting bolt travels faster and impacts static targets before my green beam/bolt.
(Just to be clear, this discussion is not about missles. Energy weapons only.)

Thanks Envoy, but I know my two weaps have different speed projectiles. While refire rate is a more important stat, I'm just wondering how/if people give any consideration to projectile speed.

Wow - I want your guns... everybody else I've ever seen shoot (and with all the gun switching I've done) you're the first to see it differently.

The "trailer" graphics have you confused I think.

There are 3 sets of graphics for each type of shot.

- the shot itself, or the "flash"
- the "effect" -- laser, blue ball, et cetera
- the "decoration" -- long laser trail, fuzzy blue trailer, ionstorm, et cetera

The shot appears to be faster but is, in fact, not. All projectiles (guns) travel at the same speed. It is an illusion caused by the trailers.

I can't even imagine the devs putting the amount of work in that it would take to set up different speeds for different projectiles, with all that would entail for installing different speed guns and making the lead indicator work. It doesn't work right as it is. Imagine using different speed guns...?

The difference then in in the "refire rate" on the weapons and this IS an attribute that SW can experiment on. This is not a difference in the type of guns, rather the refire rate of that guns.

Yes, but you have to admit that this is your opinion. Do you have evidence that would turn this opinion into fact, from someone's else perspective.
