Thread: Suggestions on Joystick Layout

Just wondering if any of you had some major suggestions for putting a Joystick together. I haven't used one since I played Doom 1. Also I'd like some pointers, like what in the world is the PoV hat good for. Many thanks.

First POV is Point of View. A toggle switch on the top of the joystick that when you use it, it scans your views. Use it instead of using the mouse. I use the Saitek X45. It's has worked well for me with flight sims for a couple years. Hasn't done well with JTL. I broke the trigger while on a mission. Not the best place for it go but where elase would it go. It's not that it was a bad jotstick for JTL and good for flight sims. It was the difference that it was use. In flight sims I shoot machine guns and hold the trigger down. In JTL I pull the trigger as fast as I can and that wore it out. Don't know how well others do since thats all I've owned. I tried playing with the mouse/keyboard but with all the stick time I've had I found it difficult to change. If your not sure which to use try buying a cheap stick and try it both was and see what you like. You'll get good arguments for using both.

the Saitek X45 is really good choice. The stick it self feels a little sticky...but for the price...cant go wrong. If you want to spend a little more...i'd go with the Saitek x52 (or whatever its called)

I have a saitek cyborg gold , have had it for years and its been great, needs a few more buttons which the new evo from saitek has. I have an x45 also which I have no use for, never got teh feel for using it. I would recomend the saitek evo . Just my opinion.

i use a logitech extreme 3d pro, which is listed in the helpful links -> joystick thread, and i really like it a lot.
has 6 buttons plus hat on the handle, and 6 buttons plus throttle on the base.
works really well for me, fire weapons, fire missle, target under reticle, boost, target component, and countermeasure on the stick, inspect, target nearest enemy, and dock on the base.
i use the pov hat sometimes to see if i can find an enemy or wp without having to pitch/roll/yaw around.
i kinda liked having the cockpit on but in my dunelizard it wouldnt allow me to see enough sky, so i would move the view up so i could see the sky and the cockpit but using the pov hat resets the view to default, so i turned the cockpit off. it also made the chat window hard to read, and occasionally the radar.

Same with me, i have 4 cyborg golds. When i heard they were going to discontinue production i whent out to comp usa and bought 3 more. Heck they were only like 29 bucks each. When you get used to a stick this comfortable it is hard to change, now i got a couple spares left over. Its a good thing cause durring JTL beta i threw one through my living room window after smashing its base. A bit frustrated i was yes, haha. i on the other hand cant stand the Evo it is waaay to touchy and i got one shortly after they were released so i may have older drivers for it. The X45 is a great stick, i hate having the rudder on the left throttle instead of the stick. the X52 is my next purchase, but until they get it working properly with JTL i will hold off.

Do you use twist for roll or do you use twist for yaw on your evo?

I dont use the evo, but on my Cyborg gold i use the twist for Yaw, like in a flight sim. left and right for roll.

Yeah, I have the EVO. And I understand the ability to change views with the hat, but whats the point in changing views and stuff.

Could someone help me with formatting my SaiteK Evo for use with JTL. I see that many use hotbuttons on the joystick itself, but I am unsure of how to do this. I have tried changing the profile, but cant get anything to work. I think the idea of targeting components and all without using the keyboard would be essential. Thanks for any help as I know this is something I should have figured out already.

I use the Saitek X36 (follow ups of it are the X45 and 52). And i have to say that i'm very satisfied in every sense with it. I also like to have all the functions i need programmed into it, if i wanted i wouldn't even need to use the mouse or keyboard to play JTL.
