Thread: A pirate's life for me
It occurs to me that it wouldn't be that hard to implement. The docking and looting animations are already there, npc can already hyper to intercept you like in missions, and it doesn't seem like it would be that hard to make another ranking system. They threw one in at the ace pilot level just for grins. The only problem I see is the amount of data required to get fighters to swarm on pirates because instead of set waypoints like in missions, the coordinates will be completely random. Still I really don't know much about programming.
It also occurs to me that this could be a way to incorporate space smuggling as well. Land at Jabba's Palace, get a smuggling mission, then travel without using in sector hyperspace to a contact in another system, all without being boarded and searched by the authorities. Successful smuggling gives you infamy points, which means that you are more likely to encounter patrols. To counter infamy, secret compartments and jamming equipment can be added. On the other side you could patrol a sector, looking for npc's and players that could be smugglers.
You could get to the point where you don't want you're infamy as high, so you can go to chasis dealer who can change your transponder codes and find a slicer to delete any reports of your deeds. It would get annoying if you were super infamous because players would keep searching you for contraband and if you accidently took a pot shot at a freighter the entire imperial fleet might come swooping down on top of you.
Thanks for all the positive feedback.

Just thought I'd share this idea before ROTW goes live and the forums are flooded with bug reports and rants. For the next expansion they should institute space piracy ranking system. I've always loved how you can dock with disabled freighters and steal their cargo but you never get anything. They can make it so ships carrying alcohol will have stealable brandy and transports carrying electronics would give you ship components etc. etc. Whenever you steal freight you gain points of infamy, raising your rank from upright citizen, to miscreant, to scally wag, to cut throat and so on. What will keep everyone from going crazy with piracy is that after a certain point the freighters can call in for help from local security forces. The more infamous you are, the more ships arrive, until you have to group to survive. The greater the infamy, the greater the reward. To counter your infamy it may be possible to install jamming equipment so reinforcements can't be called. If wanted a pvp focus, instead of calling for npc security there could be a systemwide call for players alligned with the freighter, and successful defense of the freighter could mean cash for players.
Anyway, justthought I'd share with the class.
Might wanna add something sorta like jedi visibility. You blow up a few ships. Your local RSF/CSF Pilot goes to a space station and check for anyone that need blasting.
Plus, make all things you steal from these ships have Contraband flags on them.

Some people on the pilot forums suggested a jedi style visibility/infamy system that could work well. The more crime you commit the higher your visibility, which puts you higher up the bounty list at the local RSF/IMP/REB station which makes you a targetfor high paying space bounty missions. I can definetely see this working with the Neutral Smugglers since they work for Jabba
To get your visibility back down you'll have to not commit any crime for a while and let your visibility/infamy go down. The only problem I see with this is that it would make people stop going to space, similar to a jedi hiding in a house, but there could be an alternative method like slicing records that could decrease your infamy drastically, but for a price. That way if you're poor you can just wait it out, and if you're rich but can't be bothered waiting aroundyou can buy your way out of trouble.
Anyway, just thought I'd share with the class.

I'm posting this in the SW forum because something like this could mean more craftable components. I'm not exactly sure, but it appears a cargo hold is an installed item, so why not have a secret cargo hold that can be installed i.e. false floor in the Millenium Falcon. There could also be a market for jamming devices to block the freighters from calling for help, and even grappling hooks or laser cutting tools that could help in making the docking and stealing go quicker, so you can escape from security forces with the loot.

We pillage, we plunder, we rifle, and loot
Drink up, me harties, yo ho
We kidnap and ravage and don't give a hoot
Drink up me harties, yo ho
Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me
We extort, we pilfer, we filch, and sack
Drink up, me harties, yo ho
Maraud and embezzle, and even high-jack
Drink up, me harties, yo ho
Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me
We kindle and char, inflame and ignite
Drink up, me harties, yo ho
We burn up the city, we're really a fright
Drink up, me harties, yo ho
We're rascals, scoundrels, villains, and knaves
Drink up, me harties, yo ho
We're devils and black sheep, really bad eggs
Drink up, me harties, yo ho
Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me
We're beggars and blighters, ne'er-do-well cads
Drink up, me harties, yo ho
Aye, but we're loved by our mommies and dads
Drink up, me harties, yo ho
Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me
