i fly a jsf. recently i decided to lose the armor, never got below sheilds, and put in a bigger engine. Safe to say i found a 119 speed engine with PYR in mid to low 60s. should i put armor and old engine back or can i still kick ass?

If you were to get clipped, then you do stand the risk of losing a component, where with shields and armour the armour may save you. It's a tough one to call. A lot of people do not use armour, I myself do use shileds and armour, but still die fairly quickly. If someone was to hit you with Mk III Concussions then you'd lose your shields, and then whatever underneath, whereas with armour you should be ok, I think, as concussions only damage shields.

I think you'll be fine, I haven't used armor for about a week now, and I haven't had any problems.

I personally have the habbit, especially when helping people with lower tier missions, to just burn into the middle of the enemy and then hit epulse3.

Sometimes the epulse fails and inflicts damage to my own ship.I never take damage to my system, it's all applied to my armour. But i don't want to find out what would happen to my ship if i had no armour to take the damage, probably a failed epulse then would be a quick way to the cloner...

I attempt to always keep some kind of armor between my shields and my starships delicate components.

It can be a pain to be relying on the assistance of someone who swears off of armor who has a few hits punch through the shields. Without that armor, as soon as the shields are gone, bits and pieces go flying off the starfighter very quickly.

I had a friend helping me out with my Master Pilot mission, since TIE Aggressors can be such a pain, I needed some help with those. He had to jump out for repairs, to bring back his weapons twice and restore top speed to his engines at least once.

Due to that, I came dangerously close to losing the whole mission, because the Vette was getting closer and closer to the Exit Jump point. Luckily, once the fighter escort was gone, I was able to just tear out the Vette's shields with missiles and then smack its engines about 2000 meters from its jump point. Unfortunately, I had to leave the GBs in place, since I couldn't hit them before they went into the "Circle the Exit" point routine.

The waiting around for his assistance just took time.

I always keep light armor in. With the light fighters all I need is just enough armor to take part of the shot that finally gets through my shields. But, in the end the best defense is not to get hit.

You can do fine without the armor if you are good.

However...

Your engine is junk. Speed is secondary to PYR. I'd rather fly an 80spd with 90pyr than a 150 spd with 60 pyr. You will get absolutely trashed by any good pilot with a decent RE or reward engine.

For Nym reward engines, try to RE it with stuff in the 72/73 pyr range, to try to get 77-78ish PYR. That will give you a good turning radius with the JSF, enough to be competitive.

In addition to starting out with crap YPR stats, player made engines also use up a lot more energy than RE'd and even just plain looted ones. This means that unless you dedicate a lot of mass to a giant reactor (which is a very bad idea on anything but a POB) you will not be able to run Engine Overload 4. The engine overloads not only affect speed but turning as well. You should switch back to a non-player made engine and run Engine Overload 4 if you ever plan to use this fighter in PvP.

Do a search for the Nym's Starmap quest. That will get you an engine that has ~67 pyr and ~88 spd stats. These are adjustable though, I think mine is around 65-68PYRs and 89.0 spd. Others get better stats here and there. RE that engine out and you'll have a good one.

Good PYR on L8 engines is 71+, topping out at 74+

All this talk about PYR is for PvP use, and while you might get kills with a player crafted engine, an RE'd engine will be able to take you in their sleep.

I'm currently using an L10 RE, with 80+ PYR and 100 speed. I turn inside and get position on JSF quite easily.

Grumble, about to give up on reaching 100 spd on a tier 10 RE. I just cannot get a lvl 10 over 90.0 speed to drop.
