Ok after reading through all the comments on this in other threads (didnt want to necro or bring out any of the argumentative posts) I have a suggestion that actually could make some sense for all factions of pilots.
First of all, restore the shield commands to their original state.
Second, give EVERY faction a command or skill that can permenantly effect the stats of a specific type of component.
My logic here is based on the following:
1. You still require a shipwright for a vast majority of parts and to replace decayed items.
2. Pilots are experts in the tactical use of their equipment and every pilot to a degree is a ship mechanic.
3. The ability for different factions to enhance a certain type of components would be very good for player interaction, I know that obtaining droid commands from other factionaly aligned pilots has introduced me to people I would have never even spoken to otherwise (i.e. imperials) and even got me on board a decimator, which would have never happened if it weren't for droid commands. Obviously, rebel pilots know their shields back and front. Imperials know their weapons and engines, freelancers know their core components. It makes sense that an imperial who wanted a better shield then the empire could offer could go to a rebel for information on improving their shield. (i.e. have the rebel tweak it) and at the same time the rebel could learn about weapon calibration (have the imp trick his weapons out). Giving a pilot the ability to alter the stats of a component is no different then a smuggler slicing an item in my opinion, and could even help SW's make parts that would be a little better than resources and crafting alone would allow (again, like selling pre-sliced weapons or armor).

The chain of commerce for those concerned goes like this: Pilot needs better part ----> Shipwright charges to RE or sells a component to pilot ----> pilot wants to trick out his new expensive component -----> Pilot goes to the expert and has it tricked out and probably in return tricks out something of theirs -----> pilots level up thus needing newer better parts -----> back to SW.

I believe allowing pilots to alter components would encourage the space game economy, player interaction and generally give us more room to tweak and customize (which you know we all love doing to our babies). Im not sure if the devs will even read this but if you agree or disagree please post yout thoughts.

Yes, replying to my own post because I misspoke and want to start this thread ourt as a positive thing, DONT restore the shield commands to their original state, instead do what the rest of the post says . The shield bug was pretty overpowered.

I only heard about this bug being used as an exploit only a few days before the patch. I thought the way it was prior to patch was just convenience. Leave it to kids to find a way to exploit a system. I have no problems with the way it is now by no means, just another droid command i have to wait for is all before i proceed to the selected hunting grounds.

Or better yet, heighten the hps of L8-L10 lootable shields.

I think this needs to be done too.
Just wanted to forward a thought about another way to encourage player interaction and make ships that much more customizable.

Actually it makes sense for the Rebel to shoot the Imperial when he shows up to ask, Vader smackingthe Imperial around for an hour forterminal stupidityand then the Emperor having the Imperial executed for consorting with the enemy.

What makes really makes sense here is you simply want stronger components. Because it does not make sense to make an item with set characteristics and then create process commonly availible to permanently change those set characteristics, adding a completely unnecessary step and unnecessary codingthat could have been avoided by simply making the item with the final characteristics. This is why the only droid programs that actually make any sense whatsoever are the Alliance shield programs and the Freelancer Capacitor->Shield shunt programs. Because it doesn't make sense to have programs running 100% of the time, enhancing component stats, when it would have been simpler to simply make the component with the boosted stats.

The shunting programs and the shield adjustment programs are Tactical use programs. There is going to be an immediate and conspicous cost for using the program, making the player choose when is the best time to actually use it. The Overload programs don't have a tactical decision requirement and barely have a strategic one. 'Barely' being once the programs are high enough in level to actually consume enough droid memory space to make the person choose between it or another program. The 'damage' they cause to components doesn't do anything since it doesn't affect the component's efficiency and causes no lasting damage until lvl 4 program use. Which, ratherconspicously, few (if any) use lvl 4+ droid programs except the shunts and shield adjustments.

This is just asking for Doctor/Chef buffs in space, boosting of stats beyond their normal values with 0 downside. It has had a detrimental effect on the ground game. Likely requiring significant developer attention to fix in the upcoming Combat Upgrade. And having learned nothing from that you wantsomething similiaradded to JTL so we can require a Space Upgrade in by summer 2005, not receive it until Summer 2007 and have to suffer the consequences till then?

IMHO the problem is the Rebel droid programs and not the exploit itself. The Rebel droid programs are cheese. There should be one Shield Over Charge that does both front and backor separate overcharges for the front and back that can be executed at the same time. Unless I misunderstand the way they work...

the rebel shield programs dont "overcharge" they change the balance:

normal = 1/2 front, 1/2 rear.

moderate front adjust = 2/3 front, 1/3 rear.

it doeant make them more powerful as a whole, it adjust where the power goes.

very, very useful, and goes well with the whole "rebels are muiltirole fighters".

adjust for rear while dogfighting, adjust for front on a bombing run.

i definatly agree with this. as it is now i can get 70% the shield strength that a nicely equiped nova courier would have in my awing (provided they didnt use the exploit) with a simple crafted lvl7 shield, which makes the big ships almost useless.

a shield generator that has 5 times the mass of mine should have 5 times the strength too.

this would also make the exploited shields obsolete and take away any advantage that people would have with them (unless they used it on a low lvl generator, but thats not much of an advatage anyway)

your right, they dont make them anymore powerful, but pre11.5 there was a loophole that let people use adjust front on one shield and adjust rear on another, and when they RE'd it they would end up with massive front AND back shield strength. people turned the 2400/2400 reward shield into a 3500-3500 shield that nothing else could come close to.

Ok first, chill. My little post will not bring about the apocalypse.
Second, so what you're saying is imps and rebels should never ever speak, and there should be no player interaction whatsoever across factions except for all out combat because that wouldnt be real?

You mean like.... smugglers slicing weapons?

Just a thought man, I am not encouraging an overly complicated system that will require endless nerfing, nothing more then what smugglers can already do with armor and weapons except for ship components. The *theoretical* skill, doesnt need to be anywhere near as strong as a droid command, just small boosts or improvements to equipment.
